Question synthetic oil

I was wonder if anyone knew about synthetic oil. I was told that it will extend the engine life, run engine cooler, increase mpg, and require less changes but it is more expensive. Is it worth the extra cash?

how often do you change the filter? how much better is the gas milage? how much cooler does the engine run? how much longer will the engine last?. redlines web site reported 2.2 h.p om a corvette engine. how much on a 5.4 maybe like 1.5?

hi doorslammer69

I was also thinking of changing from regular oil to synthetic. I was amazed that you can go 10k miles on this stuff. Does that Void the manufactures warranty?

Is there a comparison between Amsoil and Mobile 1?

Buy your oil and filter on sale.
$1 a quart and $3 for filter and change 3-5K.
The engine will outlast the rest of the truck.
Paying more only means your truck will have the best running engine in the bone yard.

JDF, the old saying "You get what you pay for", that $1 oil and $3 filter, looks like that is where your 2001 Ford (hate to say, cause I love Fords) is going to the bone yard if you don't take care of that engine to. Your truck is worth more to you that a $1 oil, $3 filter. I hope so.

BROTHERDAVE, I change my oil (Amsoil 20w50) every 20,000 miles or 1 year, witch every comes first. I know is just don't seem right, but I have a lot faith in Amsoil (plus it is in writing), you just change the filter 6 months after and replace the oil that was in the filter. It does run cooler, little more sponk to it. Plus you are getting a GREAT OIL. Let me send you some catalogs. Go to the bottom of this reply and click on the PureAmsoil and it will take you to my web site and request a catalog. You make the decision. Remember what is your truck worth to you. Thanks & Good Luck

Seems like if you are not using 5-30W and you have a problem, your warranty is out the window, also may be a problem if you are not changing the oil at the intervals specified in the owners manual no matter what oil you use. Just my opinion.

ruger-dfw,

I have to agree with JDF on this one. You state that his truck will be in the "boneyard" if he continues to use $1/quart oil and $3.00 filters. I use Texaco Havoline 5W30 at .78/quart and a motorcraft filter at $2.47 which brings my oil change to a whopping $7.15. I change it religiously and I definitely believe it will last as long as a comparably equipped F-150 using synthetic oil. I have no doubts that a synthetic oil is SUBSTANTIALLY better in many areas but that kind of protection isn't needed with normal use. I would like to see just ONE study done that compares two vechicles (one with synthetic, one without) under normal driving conditions to see how fast the dino oil equipped vehicle goes to the "bondyard".
The marketing departments for the synthetic oils have definitely done their job well by scaring the public into believing they need synthetic oil. Another thing that kills me is how many people put synthetic oils in their vehicles when they are leasing the car/truck and trade/sell it within 5 years.

LaserNAV:

Amsoil is pure synthetic with super additives. Mobil 1 is not pure & does not contain the additives. The price is more than justified. Use their filter also.

PS: to those who are using 20W50. WHY?????????

I live in South Florida.

Dfolk88,
Thanks, you are the first one to agree with me on anything, just ask my wife. LOL.
My friends all joke that if you need an opinion, Jeff, as in JDF, will give you one.
I'm a regular Cliff Clavin, A vast oasis of useless knowledge.
I've always used Fram and the same Havoline you use and again I've had vehicles go well over 200K and then sell them.
I do have to admit though, this is the first brand new vehicle I have ever owned and will probably be using the FORD oil and filter, at least during the warranty period.

To prove that synthetics are better than conventional oils is a very easy task that anyone can do.

By doing oil analysis you can determine that vehicles run with synthetics will have less wear metals thus resulting in longer engine life.

For instance one company tested their synthetic oil at 12,000 miles and compared it to conventional oil tested at 3,000 miles.

The results: 80% less iron wear, 58% less aluminum wear, 61.5% less lead wear, 35.9% less less viscosity increase, and 41.7% less TBN depletion.

All of this will result in longer running more effecient engines.

mspark, i cant speak for others, but i dont doubt the test done by the synthetic people it is just is it really benifitial on an everyday truck. when people get on here and act like the motor is going to crap out if you dont use it, thats b.s.
its kind of like putting super unleaded in our trucks, it is not going to hurt anything but is it nessisary?
how many thousand miles are most of you going to drive your truck? how many miles will synthetic add?
i have seen claims of increased power, better gas milage, and increased engine life, how long?( no one will touch this one)kind of reminds me of an old saying - "if it seems to good to be true it probably isnt true"
