Unhappy oil change

I have a 2000, 5.4L F150 truck with 5000 miles. The first time I changed oil I had an extremely difficult time removing the old filter and installing the new. Is there a trick to changing filters? My problem was after I got the filter loose I couldn't get it out through the suspension. I had to force it out through 2 suspension bars. Thanks in advance for the help.

Yeah, I just did mine this weekend. Took almost twice as long as it took on my 90 mustang with the double drain. The hardest part was removing the filter. I thought you were just supposed to hand tight those things. But I actually had to stop in the middle of the drain and go buy a filter tool.
Side note- I usually do the very first oil change early (2000 miles mostly highway), just to quickly remove any shavings in the oil. Makes me feel better but is it a waste?

The best way is to turn the wheels I think to the left so you have more room to get to the filter.

Crank the wheels all the way to the right. On mine, that seems to work the best. Now if the dang thing didn't drip all over the cross member below!

Yes..turn the wheels to the right..it will level the steering arms and you will have no problem getting the filter in and out. I have also noticed that hand tightening the filters on the 2000s is not good enough. I have had to use a filter wrench and tighten it more than normal...almost a full turn +.

Tomey, just crank your wheels one way or the other once it's up on the ramps. Other posts previously have said that helps a lot. (Two small advantages of 4.2s are easy plugs and easy oil filters, but I digress.)

rocketir: Doing the first oil-filter change at 2,000 is NOT a waste, IMHO.

Dustoff: Why did you need a tool to put yours on? Did you have an oil leak with hand-tightening? From my experience, 2000s aren't any different than any others. After the filter seats, one full turn by hand has done it for me -- usually I just do three-quarters of a turn.

Wink

Thanks for all of the help. I figured that there was some trick to getting the filter in and out without having to beat it.

Just changed mine yesterday. Had the wheels turned left so I could get to the two grease fittings and the filter was still hard to get out. Managed to somehow let it turn upside down so I spend the next fifteen minutes wiping down the cross member.

Used to use those quick service places until I pulled out one day and their fender cover was still hanging under my hood. This was after their so called inspection that the job was done.

Rocketir- I think $20.00 isn't a bad price to pay for peace of mind, I spent $1000 for the ESP for this reason. I changed my oil early as the first two were included in the deal anyway.

As far as metal shavings go, I would certainly hope the oil filter would do it's job of filtering out any shavings floating around. But just like the QS commercial says, it's cheap insurance and Ms. Milano can say "I told ya so".

54regcab is right, Amsoil makes one to. With two oil filters too, like getting a fresh oil change every time you drive. Not cheap but, what is your truck worth to you. Click on the Amsoil at the bottom of mine mods and it will take you there. Request some litature on it. Good Luck

Shifter...

Actually yes I have experienced very slight leaks a day or two later after hand tightening the filter on both of the 2000s I had/have. Friend has a 2000 5.4L and also experienced this. I noticed that the factory filter was on tighter than hell on both of my 2000s...and was fun at first to loosen (MUCH tighter than normal).

I've always hand tightened plus a 1/4 turn in my vehicles over the years without a problem. I have to tighten the filter a bit more, no matter what brand it is, for some reason on the truck. No problems or leaks at all.

all4chem: About Ms. Milano -- Is that who I think it is? The one who says "It's like giving a woman a vacuum cleaner. You know better." and "Women know when you lie"? If that's Ms. Milano, tell me more!

I think the ad that is being referred to is the Quaker State ad and it isn't Alyssa Milano. It's the woman from "King of Queens", Leah Remini. Alyssa Milano does the 1800COLLECT commercial.
