A friend of mine used spray carb cleaner. I saw him do it so I did it. The excess will evaporate in short time and it seems to work okay. He first tried it because he had a check engine light and the dealer said it was because he over oiled his K & N filter.
Use it when you are stopping for the day or at least an hour or so.

TB or carb spray works great. Just make sure that you let it dry before reinstalling it.

For the MAF we never took them off. Just sprayed the wires to make them clean. The carb spray will evaporate within minutes.

If you really need to clean it, use electric motor contact cleaner. It leaves no residue and is designed for electrical components.

I just did this over the weekend on my 91 Explorer. Very easy! Just unscrew the MAF and lift off, that easy. Take a can of carb cleaner and spray the two 'filaments' (they look like lightbulb filaments). Wait a few minutes to dry and then put it back in.

This was a fix for a problem I was having with the K&N. The K&N set off the Explorer's check engine light. After cleaning I haven't had a problem.
