1/4 mile times = 17.09 et
Well, I got 17.09 on the 1.4 mile, but i thought i would get a quicker time. I realized that i lost about one second because of tire spin. I was thinking about having some sort of weight at the rear of the truck that would extend even further out with the tailgate down, in order to weigh down the back tires. My truck has the regular cab, with a long bed.
I was wondering if anyone has added any weights to the back of their truck to weigh down the tires, and if so, how much weight should i put on?
thanks

Ouch,
Well, its a psychological thing with me. When i was a kid, i was looking out the back window of my parents car as they were driving down the street. And i saw this two cars racing. One was a smaller car than the one that i was in, but it was going really fast, but then i saw this big black truck following it, and catching up to it. I was intimidated by that truck. It just looked like such a mean monster.
That thought had always stuck with me.
I love having a large truck go fast. Its a great feeling to get next to a civic, and to blow its doors off. And every once in a while, i'm able to get next to a chevy or dodge big boy, that wants to race.
Every time i step into my truck, i know that theres a red light somewhere, waiting for me to get there in order for it to turn green, and right there next to me, will be a challenger. Eventually, i want to go up against the mustangs. i could already beat the v6 mustangs, but i can't keep up with the v8's.
I have goals (or desease, not sure which), and i can't stop wanting to make my truck reach light speed.
My truck has the nick name "tie bomber." All you star wars freak could appreciate that. =P

Well why didn't u say so. I don't care about distance times or 0 to 60, but if someone wants to go, i'll give em their money's worth. Now i'm not into taking on cars, gas is expensive and it's like comparing apples and oranges. My truck is a 4x4 and weighs about 5500lbs, so a 2000-3000lb car has the advantage. But if a Dodge 1500 or 2500 wants to go, i'll smoke him. I've come out on top evrytime.
I've got a thing for dodges. My buddy has a 1500 and said he bought it b/c it looks like a big rig. Well, i drive a tractor trailer and told him if he wants a big rig, get ur class A cdl license.
Anyway, he thought b/c his truck is taller than mine and has the 5.?, he'd blow me away. I beat him so bad, it was like takin candy from a baby.
As for chevies, I dont waste my time, they really dont have much get up and go from my experiences.

Its like having the best of both worlds, a fast vehicle, and it serves as not only a means of transportation for passengers, but also for boats, plywood, Dirt bikes, bags of cement, the in-laws, furniture,...
(although the in-laws complain a little when it rains)
So has anyone put onto the back of their truck something so that the rear tires could grip better? I have excellent tires, but not enough weight on them to keep them from spinning.
By the way, i got bitched out by my girl today. She was driving down a street in her car, and she heard a mustang pass her by, going around 60-70, followed by a black truck on its tail. It was me in that truck. Although i did lose, i was happy that my girl was only mad at me cause i was racing. She didn't see that i was smoking a cigarette as well. For that, she would of killed me.

Your signature says 3.55 . Do you have a limited slip diff.? Can you jam gears well with the factory manual/ & shifter? You also list 4.10's as future wants. Don't add weight if you don't need to (you want lighter weight). Try this: if you don't have a LS, get one when you change to 4.10's. You will notice huge differences in quickness w/4.10's. Next, when you race/or when needed have extra wheels with high traction tires (drag radials, slicks, or wide high traction street tires). Use when necessary. Lower the pressure at the track. You should be able to eliminate tire spin at all with that HP, and be able to haul ***** with those gears. Just an idea, I've done some passes over the years with my 71 Torino Cobra/429SCJ/4-speed/4.30 detroit locker/drag pack.

Ouch! My 91 T-Bird with a 3.8 V-6 will do a 16.52 1/4 mile. Hey Max, I had a 69 Torino with the same setup with a 4.56 locker.

ps398 - It was a 69 with a 429? "Had", what did you do with it? I bet you never forget the pull from that. I have 2)71s. I paid $900 for the both of them in 1978.

Regarding the weight to be added to the back of the truck, I do believe that lighter would be better, but with my experience as a spectator at drag strips, i've always seen that the trucks, even with superchargers, have had some weights at the rear of the truck. Most typically, i've seen two or three metal plates at the rear. Since its not directly over the rear axle, it has a lever effect. Because of this lever effect, it tends to pull more of the front weight over to the rear tires too. It shifts the center of gravity alot better over to the rear tires. Also, I usually see trucks that are lower in suspension at the rear, than at the front, which also helps to contribute to the shifting of the center of gravity.
I know that gowing to wider tires would help in surface area, but per square inch, i would have less weight pushing down on larger tires.
Extreme sports cars always have mid engines so that all of its weight would land on the rear tires (with the expection of a few cars like the viper). These cars have been designed to have great balance of weight going to the rear tires, pushing down their huge tires in order to get maximum traction. However, my truck does not at all have this balance, and thats what i'm trying to get at. Not perfect balance, but better balance.
I've figured that what i need is something around 150-200 pounds added to the truck. And since it is going to be pushed to the rear of the truck, perhaps even onto the tailgate when the tailgate is open, it'll have that lever effect, and the weights would act as if it were more that what it really weighs. Perhaps 250 or 300, but i'll still only be pulling 150-200 pounds.
Don't get me wrong, i do appreciate all the help from all of you guys, but when it comes to seeing what really works, and what doesn't work, i go to the drag strip, and see what they've done. And i see which trucks go fast, and which ones don't.
And yes, i do agree with you about getting the limited slip. My truck doesn't have one, and i know it'll help alot. I've been eye balling them in my summit catalogs, along with the 4.10 gears.

Hey there Dissonance,
Is that a 4X4? If its not, I do not see any reason why you do not try to get a Lightning. I just ran a 13.896@99.13 today with a 2.23 60' time. That'll get other people's attention. I need new tires, as these F-1s have 17k miles on 'em. You have the 3.55, limited slip, reg cab, all you need is the Lightning motor! If you look hard enough one could be had for $28k. Keep an eye out for a guy by the handle of FORDSALES in the Lightning forum, he usually hears of such sales early and can hook you up. Good Luck

Wow tundra, great time you got on the 1/4 mile.
I would love to have a lightning, but i can't afford it. I have to do things slowly, and very affordably. I got my truck for 16,900. It was a great deal for all that it brought.
No, my truck isn't 4x4, and it doesn't have the limited slip (but will soon).
I got a truck that didn't have any of the luxury items, except for 40/60 split bench, AC, Stereo (no cassette), and a cute little intermittent wiper. But alas, it had a 4.6L V8 with a manual transmission. And it was also long bed, which has come in handy many times. And best of all, it was black.
I basically got a work truck that had a good combination for speed. And i want to make it faster. Since i saved alot on the purchase of the truck, i could spend more money on aftermarket parts like a blower, exhaust, tires, throttle bodies, headers,....
And that's where i'm at now, trying to make my truck reach light speed.
So, has anyone put on some weight to the rear of the truck to weigh down the back tires?????????

The observations you saw at the track about weight transfer is very keen and correct, especially to stance and most rear additions of weight. My suggestions above were because your application does not seem to have a great amount of HP. Limited Slip, quicker gears, weight tranfer, and added weight at rear most area are all great ideas. A complete suspension setup for drags might not be the best or cheapest setup for the street on a relatively low HP vehicle. I've been trying out all of the above concepts for over 30yrs on my 71 Torino Cobra. Try a few different things and see what works best through trial and error. Good luck.
