Post Need help with "Service Engine Soon" light

Need a little help with a problem. Yesterday I put in my Superchip with no apparent problems. Today I put a K&N FIPK on my 5.4 and now the Service Engine Soon light is on. Any idea what may be causing this? I believe it has to be something relating to the FPIK installation since the light was not on after installing the Superchip. Anyone else had this problem? Truck runs great, idles a little rough now.

Added a Ford bug deflecter, floor mats, a K&N filter and a Dynamax Race magnum muffler.

Since the K&N will flow more air I would disconnect the battery and turn on head lights. This will reset the comupter for the modification you made. Bill

Cool

The computer might have temporarily seen a problem. Pull the battery terminal off for 5-10 minutes and then reconnect. If the light is still on, there is a problem that needs to be fixed and your truck will need to be hooked to a code scanner.

Think I may have found the problem. I took it off and discovered that the rubber gromet that goes in the intake pipe for the Mass Airflow Sensor is gone. Must have been sucked into the motor. Anybody else ever have that problem. That would explain the bad odor coming out the exhaust last night. Other than waiting until Monday and running over to K&N (I only live about 20 minutes away), are there any other solutions. Also, could that rubber gromet cause any damage to the motor? The smell is gone from the exhaust, so I am hoping it just burned up. Are there any possible after affects?

Ron, these guys are right on the money. I installed the Airaid FIPK and the first thing the instructions said was disconnect the battery. Also, I saw a thread here where someone else had the same problem. They found out the K&N filter had too much oil on it and it got on the MAF. Just another thought.
Good Luck

Found the problem. Took truck to dealer today and had to have Mass Air Flow Sensor replaced. No oil on it - tech just said it was bad - replaced it under warranty. Put my Superchip back in and it runs great. MAF Sensor may have been going out all along. Now I have to decide whether to put the K&N FIPK back on.

My "Check Engine Light" started coming on about 2 weeks after I installed my superchip. I disconnected the battery to get it to go off and it came back on again within about a week. I talked to Mike Troyer who was a huge help and told me to try switching to good fuel i.e. Texaco. I was using 92 octane from a cheap gas station called "Astro" Since I switched to Texaco gas over a month ago the check engine light has stayed off. The dealer wanted $75 to check the code - so 9 cents a gallon more for better gas doesn't seem like such a bad deal.
