Post IMTV, How does it work?

That's Intake Manifold Tuning Valve.
It's on the 4.6L, in the lower intake manifold, that hangs below the upper intake manifold. The wires to the valve plug in down behind the alternator. How does this work? Is the lower chamber a resonator only, or does air flow go through the lower also? Anybody know what the valve looks like, and how this works? Inquiring minds want to know!

Also wondering, if this thing died or got stuck, how would we know?

Talking

I remember reading in 4 wheel and off road that ford used some type of valve that closed at low RPMs to allow the engine to breath like two 4 cylinder engines, hence creating the incredible torque that the 4.6 and 5.4 have. This valve opens up once the RPMs pass a certain level so that the engine breaths normally. I am sure if it died it would set a code or something.

Thanks LHM.

Has anybody seen the innards of the IMTV?
What moves?
Is the actuator a motor, a solenoid, or what?
Is it just ON - OFF, or are there positions in between?

Anybody??? Thanks

I am curious too!

I can actually feel/hear it open on my 5-speed. It sounds pretty cool when it opens. I will try to find more.

It makes ya wonder if it can be set to be open all the time.

Where did you find this info Granpa?

Ford borrowed it from the V-Boost of the V-Max (Yamaha - street rocket) -- only they didn't get the same HP:CC (darn!).

Yes, I am reminded of the SHO.

Yamaha did build the system. Twelve runners on the intake manifold, six cylinders. Small ports for off idle/cruise, large ports that open based on conditions.

When I think about it, I don't think it would be a bad deal if it stuck open...
