mixing oils...

For those of us who cannot decide between 5w-30 and 10w-30.... what about mixing the two types? If you use the same brand, that shouldn't create any problems? right? anybody ever do this?

I don't have any evidence supporting my arguement, but my dad always told me this is something thta should *not* be done.

Mixing means you get neither the full advantage of 5W30 or 10W30. Its pretty non committal. Your engine would survive this however!

I'd use on or the other. What does your truck call for? I'd use that. Mine calls for 5w-30, that's what I use.

Different weight oils might not have the same amount of additives. Go to www.chevron.com and use the contact option. There tech section will be able to answer that question.

ssanto:

No problem--you just 'create' a mid-range viscosity 'oil'--been doing it for years--both 'on track' vehicles and daily drivers.

Provided they are both the same manufacture, ie: Mobil 1, I don't see a problem.

Take care,

I a certain instant oil change place i worked at years ago which shall remain nameless...They would take all the half quarts laying around and mix them together. Every 20th or so oil change that lucky person would get a multi-grade, multi-viscosity, multi-brand oil.

While on the subject of oil, i usually use Castrol GTX. But what would you guys think of using an oil designed for big diesals like Rotella T or Mobil Delvac. There supposedly good for a few hundred thousand miles in a tractor trailer, would they provide good protectiong for a gas engine?
