Cool

To answer the question of how I got the pipe to stay....

To do the mod you must remove the air box. To get it out all you have to do is pull straight up at the point where the two halves come together. there are two small tabs on the bottom that go in to a set of holes with rubber in them. These hold the air box still. then pull it toward the engine to remove the snorkel from the fender.

Once you have this out you will notice that the hole on the end is only less than 2". This is the part we are out to change.

The easiest way to do it is to cut the end off and replace it with a 3" PVC pipe. Take your piece of pipe and stand it on end on a piece of metal. Take a small torch and heat up the bottom of the plate. With the metal hot, push down on the piece of pipe. Do this just for a little bit. Just enough to get the end rolled or ridged slightly. With this done Stand the pipe up on end again(once cooled). Take the end of you air box and place it on top of the pipe. It should be on there so that it looks like a mushroom. Twist it back and forth so that it will make a ring on the insde of the airbox. This is where you will cut it off. Cut off the pipe just before the line. This will make the hole tight. Reasemble it in the mushroom position. Using you body weight pull down on the hood to get the pipe to slide through. If it is too tight cut it a little more. You want it be tight. Pull it the rest of the way through, until it hits the ridge you make earlier.

Now go out to your truck and measure from the two holes to the fender. Add 3" to this number. now measure from the two tabs out(dont forget the 3")and cut off the pipe.

The next thing that you will notice is that the hole in the fender is oval. It is 3 1/4 x 3 1/2. Your pipe is going to be 3 1/2 round. What you need to do is take a grinder and take off 1/8 from both the top and bottom. Do this for about 3" of the pipe. Once you have it the right size slide it in the fender and push it into the holes. Your done! Reassemble the airbox and drive!

The other question about the sound of the removed silencer..... It makes you truck sound like it has a 4 barrel carb. Not real sure if I personally like it yet. Makes it sound like an old truck not a new one. Had someone say it "sounded faster" what ever that means?????

Hope this helps someone....

Very intriguing Black 98. I have a question regarding your mod. You say:

The next thing that you will notice is that the hole in the fender is oval. It is 3 1/4 x 3 1/2. Your pipe is going to be 3 1/2 round. What you need to do is take a grinder and take off 1/8 from both the top and bottom. Do this for about 3" of the pipe.
Are you saying remove 1/8" from the top and bottom of the pipe or the fender wall?

Also you suggest to:
Using you body weight pull down on the hood to get the pipe to slide through.
I assume you mean to use you body weight to push on the half of the Air Filter box you are trying to shove the pipe into. Is this correct?

I like your idea of “flaring” the end of the pipe to make a seal. Quite ingenious. I would imagine that a well placed bead of weather-strip adhesive or silicone may facilitate the seal as well. I believe I’m gonna try this after I get my slapper replacement.

Take the grinder to the pipe. It is easier and that way it can be put back if you ever desired to do so. You are right on the other. You are using just the weight of your body to force the tube through the new opening. Just lean on it though dont hang from it. too much and you may crack it

I just did Black 98's mod. Took 20 min. The only thing I did different was use 3" pvc drain pipe. It fits right through the hole in the fender if you squish it a little. Haven't driven anywhere yet to tell the diff.

Talking

The stuff that I had was SCH40. So it isnt very easy to bend. If you get the thinner you can though. Glad to hear that you got it on though.

The thin-wall pvc is available at the building supply in 10' lenghts for under $5 & is much easier to work with than the SCH40. I am looking into replacing the silencer from MAF to throttle body with it.

Just pull out the silencer if you want a larger opening. It is bigger than 3" without the silencer. I looked in to having that stuff bent for that before. When you bend it it will collapse at the bend. Making a bottle neck for air flow.
