Intake Silencer Removal
This is a relatively inexpensive mod which may increase air flow into the Throttle Body. If nothing else, It makes a cool sound.
Disclaimer: I made this mod to my truck of my own free will. If you make the mod and screw something up, don't blame me. Also, this mod was not my idea. I found out about it by reading this invaluable forum. I simply put pictures w/ instructions I gathered from this board. Also this mod may or may not void your Warranty
1. disconnect pos. battery cable (this will reset the computer to adjust for any increase in air flow which may result from this mod)
2. Remove the Throttle Body (TB) cover by removing the three 10mm bolts. (One on passenger side and two on the driver side of TB)
3. losten the clamp holding the Silencer Assembly (SA) to the TB.
4. Remove the SA from the TB and then remove the two vacuum lines from the silencer assembly near the TB
5. losen the clamp holding the SA to the Air Filter Box and remove the the SA.
6. Rotate the SA so as to expose the Intake Air Temperature Sensor and unplug the sensor.
7. SA can now be removed from the engine compartment.
8. Remove the AB flex connector from the SA by CARFULLY inserting a long, thin blade screwdriver between the Flex Connector and the SA and carefully seperating the two. (Caution should be taken during this step to ensure that the screw driver does not penetrate the rubber Flex Connector and the mechanics skin!!)
9.Using a Dremmel tool w/ a standard cutting wheel, carefully make a cut inside the SA at the larger end. Be carefull not to cut to deep or you may cut the outer housing.
10. make a second cut around the silencer to facilitate the removal of the silencer.
11. Carefully remove the silencer by grasping and twisting slightly to break the bond of the silencer at the small end. The silencer should just slip out.
12. Using the Dremmel tool and a sanding barrel, lightly sand the cut on the modified SA.
13. Make sure to blow out the SA to remove any cuttings which may enter the combustion chamber.
14. Apply a coating of black weather strip adhesive to both the inside of the flex connector and the modified SA and reassemble.
installation of the modified SA is the reverse of the above directions. Make sure the IATS is reconnected as well as the vacuum hoses and battery.

Thanks for the props.
Honestly I haven't noticed much increase in performance, But I'm still running the stock air filter. I'm gonna get a K&N filter when the existing stock filter needs to be replaced.
I'm also in the planning stages of an Air Box Mod that will draw that fender air rather than under the hood air. When I get the details worked out, I'm gonna give it a try. I'll take pics and post those as well so every one can see the results.
Any one know if a Tungsten Carbide bit for a Dremel will cut the fender metal??

Great Instructions, but I have one question.
Can this be done without the dremel tool somehow? I don't have a dremel, and can't really afford one right now.

Bad angler there have been alot if threads by people(including myself) that explain how to do the 3"fresh air tube modification. This mod does add performance over stock. It is actually more than the K&N(noticably with out a dyno machine). So check out the other threads and try it out you wont regret it.
P.S. IT is made from PVC pipe and cost less than $2!

It is replacing the old 1 7/8" air hole with a 3" piece of PVC. Do you need to know more? Or have you already done it.
I pulled out my silencer today. It wasnt stuck at all. I just pulled it out. Maybe they didnt glue them on some of the years.

Black 98,
I assume you are talking about the piece that goes between the airbox and the fender. If so how do you put in the pvc pipe and make it stay? Thank for your help, in advance!

Kelly,
The silencer is some type of plastic and I think this mod could be done w/o a Dremel. It would require a very sharp box cutter type knife and a lot of patience and luck. The chance of injury to yourself or the housing would increase. Also, I have read in other posts on this subject that the silencer will simply slip out. In my situation this was not the case and it had to be cut out. It could be that it is glued to the elbow at the larger MAS end and can be pried loose.
Black 98,
My airbox mod is gonna involve some of that metalic, flexable dryer hose you've seen at the HW store. I believe the hose is 4" diamwter. I haven't worked out the details on how I'm gonna affix it to the airbox yet.
I figure if the Tungston Carbide bit will chew throught the fender wall, I might rout the hose up to the grill and create a "scoop" type set-up. I know that going afer the fenderwall w/ a Dremel is gonna cause me some serious anxeity.

Would it not draw a TON of dust to draw air
through the fenderwell? You would have to change the filter constantly would you not? When I go down a dirt road, dust BOILS out
of the wells. Am I just not understanding how you all are doing this?

Marvelous post!
Very close to a professional-level job of illustration and explanation.
If you do more of these documentaries, I'd be happy to put them into a nice PDF for you (if you post the pdf to this web).

Andrew,
Good question, but there is an area between the engine compartment double bulkhead and the wheelwell splash guard that should allow for the routing of the duck that I'm thinking of installing. Couple that w/ a "reusable" K&N, there should be little to no problem. At this point there are a couple of things I'm concerned with. 1) will this proposed setup draw in a lot of water during rain storms? and 2)How the heck do I remove the clips that hold the splash guard in place. I've tried tugging on them but I'm concerned that they will be destroyed in the process.
I've got a new engine on order (piston slap) once that is in and installed I'll start working on this mod. I'll take pics and let everyone know how it turns out.
