Lightbulb scanner fo codes

I need an inexpensive scanner for the 1996-2000 EEC V ORB II computer 1997 F150. It's the late model nobody handles ie: PEPBOYS, AUTO ZONE, DISCOUNT AUTO. Iam tired of getting ripped off at my local dealer 3 times to the tune of $85.00 each time to check the 3 codes in 4 weeks for check engine light. First they replaced the idle solonoid, the the oxygren sensor RT side, the gas return canister,at my expense. Now the lights back on for the 4th time. Strange enough my truck runs fine through all this.
I REALLY NEED A SCANNER since my truck has 37,800 miles on it (sorry out of warranty.)
Can any one HELP ME??????

There no inexpensive scanner for this, they're all over $300.

A. Be sure you always have the gas cap on when your truck is running.. This will cause the light to go on (the computer checks for pressure in the gas tank, and will signal the light if there is pressure loss). so, if you fill your truck up with fuel with the engine running, thats a no-no..

b. If the truck is running fine, good mpg, smooth engine, then run it a few days with the light on, and see if it goes off..
Your not damaging anything..

I use and Autotap code scanner. I think I paid $245 but forget the actual cost. It consist of an interface cable to plug your computer into the port on your vehicle and software to run on the pc. Works pretty good.
