Coil packs? 4.6 , 5.4?
I have a 99 S/C 4x4, 4.6, K&N intake kit, Flowmaster exhaust. I recently replaced spark plugs and wires#@%$. The coil packs are the things on the front of the engine that the plug wires go to right? My friend has a 01 with a 5.4, He doesn't have the coil packs, I thought the engines were more similar. I am confused. M truck seems to be quicker on the freeway than his, his is stock. Just thought I'd share that.
Josh,
FYI all F-150 5.4 engines use the coil on plug (COP) ignition. All 1997-99 4.6 engines use the coil pack with plug wires, and all 2000 + 4.6 engines use the COP.

Quote==== "If you have plug wires, you definitely don't have coil packs. Coil packs sit directly over the plug. You are seeing the distributor block."
We'll think before you drink.
The 4.6 wires do run into a coil pack. The 5.4 has a totally different setup. The 5.4 has 8 seperate coil packs that mont directly on top of the spark plugs and run through a series of connectors. :o

jmc is right on this one. a truck with plug wire's has coil pack's. and coil on plug is just that, one coil per plug. coil pack. a unit with four plug wire's going to it. with two coil's in side that little black box. one coil for two cyl's. it fire's on compression stroke and exhaust on the oposing cyl. at the same time. with the coil on plug sys. it is a better ignition sys. and can use a smaller coil. with out heat build up. it does not keep the coil on all of the time. it just turn's it on just before it need's it. and it does it very fast. but that keep's the heat down in the coil. they both work about the same. just no dang plug wire's on the one.
I had 6 "engine coils" replaced, over a 3 year period. Ford said they had a known problem and gave me an extended warranty due to the problem. Anyone else have this problem. When the coil went bad the engine would vibrate, and idle real low, also at speeds of around 45 it would shake violently, and miss horribly.

It ran rough due to the bad coil.
