Post Speedo gone wacko

My 97 F150 4.6L has a defective speedometer. When I am going 50 is says 30 and then bounces around.
My questions are: 1) They don't have a cable anymore do they, how do they work now days? AND 2)Does a faulty speedo send ANY bad info to the computer that effects performance?? and last, 3)Anyone know how much to replace the speedo?

Before you think of replaceing the speedometor consider replacing the sensor at the transmission. It is only about $35.
