5.4L Gas Mileage
Have a 00 5.4L SC 4x4 ORP 157"wb. From day one the thing gets 14 mpg almost to the letter, every time (have 3300 miles on it) No matter how it is driven (fast or slow) it always gets 14 mpg. Now I realize it weights in excess of 5000lbs, but i would even settle for 16 mpg!! the price of gas here in oregon is out of control, Does anyone have any Ideas????
Also, and most important, driving habits...Drive 36 miles round trip to work. 3 miles stop and go, 9 miles freeway, 4 miles country roads...then in reverse on the way home...

I have a 1999 f150 with 5.4 when I got the truck new it only got about 13 mpg after about 6000 miles when motor broke in I was getting around 14.5 to 15 mpg I installed a milage master (magnets that go on fuel line)and milage went up to a solid 16 in the warmer months. They claim to increase mpg 11.6% they cost around $13.00 .
I have a heavier Expedition with a 5.4 ad I get about 13 in the city but about 17-18 on the highway!
I also use the cruise a lot!
Superchip bumped me up 1 mpg in the city and 1-2 on the highway!

I have a 99 SC 5.4 with a 3.73LS rear end. It also has the ORP with 17" wheels with GY Wrangler AT/S's. What is your tire pressure and are you running with any mods? Mine has a K&N air filter and dual exhaust and I consistently get 13.5 CITY and 16.5 HWY. That is not driving slow. I also run my MAX cold tire pressure at 45PSI (WINTER) and 42 PSI (SUMMER)The tire pressure change made the biggest difference in my HWY MPG. Even with my mods, I could not get into the 16's. I bumped up my tire pressure and finaly got 16.5 and that is at a 75 MPH continous cruise on my road trips.

I drive 30 + miles to work one way. about 18 of that highway. This winter I have averaged about 15-16 mpg. On trips empty I've seen as good as 18.5. Speed makes a huge difference as well as tire pressure. My 5.4 is doing better than my 4.6 did. In the summer and highway I should see 19.

I always considered that part of the territory. One time I got 14.5 MPG coming home from Wisconsin to PA. And-no kidding- I had a heck of a tail wind. But 100 mile commute a day, 8 of it stop and go. 80 of it highway and 14 of it country roads has always given me the 13.5 MPG.

You shouldn't drive in Reverse on the way home, not only is it dangerous, but it scares the hell out of other drivers - that's probably why your gas mileage isn't as good as you'd like...
Seriously - I'd be happy with 14. I have a 98 F-250 LD 4x4 with the 5.4 and I average 12 - 10 when pulling my boat. I think the best I've got is 14 and that was 100% highway driving at 65 mph. The F-250 is heavier than the F-150 which accounts for my 12 mpg average. However, I just added the superchip and I'm on my first tank of premium ($1.89 a gallon!!! - I'm from Portland, OR so I feel your pain) and if I can keep my foot out of the throttle (I also recently added a 40 series flowmaster catback and K&N)I'm hoping to get a few mpg better.

Sounds like we all are in about the same range. Around town I get about 11.5 mpg. On the highway(I cruise btw. 80 and 85mph here in the wide open spaces of Montana) I get 14mpg. I'd certainly like more, but can't expect much better at those speeds.

I am curious if anybody with a 5.4 with 3.55 or 3.73 rears have recorded their MPG with tailgate up. I have owned a RANGER for about 8 years before getting my full-size with a preconceived notion that driving with the gate down increases milage due to less drag. My best HWY milage has been with my tailgate up on my F150. Any ideas?

Damn you guys im getting between 8-9 mpg here. If i were to get 12 i would be amazed. Of course most if not all of my driving is local and city driving. I can get a tank of gas to last me 2 weeks and I always tank up once I reach 215 miles on the trip odo. Everytime its the same, no matter how concervative I am or if im reving it up to 3k rpms for average driving compared to 2k always same mpg, I guess this is a good thing
Above all though I love my truck and once the gas prices drop some, I might go for the Superchip

3000 rpms??? Heck, my truck is lucky to not hit 5000 at least twice in the 4 miles that I drive to work. Something is not right. You should try resetting the computer (aka disconnect battery) and see if that helps. I'm getting 14mpg (city) and it's a stoplight to stoplight drag race. I LOVE WOT!!!

Double tap you can get the mileage masters from a few different places the cheapest Ive found is from harbor freight also have seen them in jc whittney but thier about $5.00 more.I also put one in my last truck 1988f-350 diesel crew cab and had gained about 1.5mpg.It breaks up the hydrocarbins (what ever they are) and the fuel burns more cleanly.
