Hey getting kinda rough in here. Just had to chime in. My truck is completely stock except for the K&N Filter (not system).

I havent claimed any major victories, after all...its a truck

My advice is, if you get a regular cab get the 4.6, if you get the supercab you might as well get the 5.4. I love the 4.6 and will probably get one in my SC when they up the horsepower. Test drive them all and see what you like, but dont expect great gas mileage with any because after all....its a truck.

RAOUL, F150LUVA -

Hey guys ... it's all fun. I like you guys. RAOUL, hows the drinking and driving on the internet coming along? Did your sister buy you some more wheels or do you have her big screen?

F150LUVA - I respect your opinion but I respect mine more (LOL...LOL). What does the LUVA mean? or is it general?

Take care to all. See ya on the rebound!

What do you do about your warranty when it comes a time to use it? With the headers and pipes ... I bet the dealer sees an opportunity to run and hide. I'd like to add on mine like that but I always have trouble and having to make good on the warranty.

Dont get me wrong, I have no prob with ya. All we have is the K&N Airfilter. Dont be knockin me, cause the driver was not a gramps, and just because my engine is a little smaller, doesnt mean it cant take on the 5.4. {I think my 4.6 has 240 hp stock bacause it is not an ordinary 4.6.

I have a 98 regular cab flareside V6 and I got a supercab styleside V8 from a reantal company. I can tell you one thing. Don't buy the V6. It noticibly slower, busier, noisier, and less smooth then the V8(eventhough I have a superchip in my V6). There's absolutely no question about it. The gas mileage I get is also about the same as the V8.

I have A 4.6l And with mod. its very strong. I am pleased with overall performance but I have to bo honest my fathers truck has the 5.4l with no mods. the 5.4 is much stronger than 4.6 gas milage is no difference between the two, just can't replace cubic inches.

Although this may not be as "direct" a comparo, I am "graduating" to my new F150. I am trading a 91 GMC with a V6 and a 5 speed, and when I ordered the F150 the first thing I added as an option was the 5.4L! After living with an underpowered dog for 9 years, I couldn't wait to upgrade the power curve!! Because I was underpowered, my milage suffered because I always had my right foot in it. Seemed like the gas pedal was more like an on/off switch, and I have only gotten 13mpg in town, 16 hwy. Granted, the 4.2L Ford V6 has a ton more power than my old GMC, but don't sell yourself short!

F150LUVA-

No harm intended on the "WIMPY" statement. I was just sounding .... all of the F150 are nice trucks no matter what the engine is but bigger is better for the power hungry. It also appears that people like Tina, Triton46 and others have spent a lot of money making additions that enhance their trucks. I bet a lot of them are sharp looking and do run great but you have to compare apples to apples.

The race you won against the 5.4 ... did you see who was driving? Was it GRAMPS? You'd have to have some MODs to take the 5.4 stock in the same model truck. Do the math ... 2x2-4.6-3.55 <-> 2x2-5.4-3.55 (more torque, more HP). I wouldn't take my bet if I were you. Then if we matched the same MODs, I would, in most probability, have a larger gain because of the percentage points.

A true story - LISTEN ...
a supershop wrote an article to an auto magazine about racing a MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE against an IROC Camaro. They added $10K of performance mods including suspension upgrades and seat/harnesses. The ECLIPSE beat the stock IROC by only .2 second 0-60 and .35 second 0-100. Then a technician from a GM Dealership wrote that he noticed the IROC was stock! He then asked what do they think the result would be if they added $10K of MODs to the IROC? Good question ... Next issue, A FORD technician wrote in and said with his stock Mustang LX 5.0, he'd would spend about $4000 on a supercharger kit and throttle adjustments and put the rest in the bank and guarantee VICTORY!

Compare yourself to an equal playing field to see what you are really worth. Modifications individualize your vehicle, they don't speak for the rest as a whole. The V6's also run great but in a smaller truck ... I'd hurt it if it was in mine. TINA's post was an excellent idea.

BTW: Don't confuse a junior member not knowing who's who with his/her ability to intelligently decide which way to dodge the bull!

I have a 99 SC 4.2 331 auto and drive 70 miles per day. No mods except for Extang Cover. Mileage runs 17.5 to 18.5 depending on traffic and whether I am running late or not. The truck has plenty of power but does not haul or tow anything heavy. Resale is not a problem for me because the truck will have 150k when I trade it. My complaints are that it is a little slow off of the line, and does not have much kick over 90mph but between 15 and 90 it is great.

Thanks to everyone for all the inputs.
I'm leaning towards the 4.6 V8 now.

Don't be in such a rush to decide.

Give us two more days and we'll have you making a deposit on a Lightning.

I own a 99 regular cab with the 4.2,and it's fine for everyday driving, just be sure to get a 3.55 axle.I live in the Ohio river valley where it's all up and down, and the motor has plenty of zip. The supercab, according to specs, only weighs 200+lbs more than a reg. cab.I also have a cap on mine(165lbs),so it's close to that even.
I do not tow,and haul light.I considered the price difference,which was huge! With the factory $500 incentive,$500 dealer incentive,and $690 retail/$587 whls for the 4.6,well,that's over $1587 for the 4.6! For the 5.4,try $2159!
With the savings,I got every option I needed. After all,I bought an F150 for it's overall ability to get me from point A to point B,regardless of the size of the motor.
As far as resale goes, even if I traded it today,I would not recoup that $1587-$2159 for a V8.I plan on keeping this however, for 12-15 years,so by then, there's not much left. All that said...cost aside...I'd rather have a V8!...you get what you pay for!!!

I have the ford extended war. It specifically states that turbo and blower mods are prohibited, however it goes on to say that due to some obscure law somewhere it is ILLEGAL to deny warranty claims to a vehicle with aftermarket parts.
These include but are not limited to headers, air filters, exhaust, Ford motorsport heads, ford motorsport throttle bodies and the like. The ONLY exceptions are spelled out in the fine print.

Of course it also states that any aftermarket parts are not covered. So if my headers rust out I wont expect ford to fix them.
Chris

CUJET:

I've also got the extended warranty (6 yr. 100K FORD). Yea ... they didn't want to do the 6 yr. but a 5 yr. but I GOT IT!

I am going to read up on this again. I'd like to add headers and dual exhausts but the aggravation of rigging up such a system on these later models might not be so easy. The dealer told me that any exhaust modification before the muffler will void the engine warranty and any other thing that could result from failing engine components. That seemed ridiculous but if they design the exhaust systems for back pressure design like they say then who can argue?
