Buy a V6 or a V8?
Many always say that the 4.6l isnt that powerful. I dont think it gets the respect it deserves. Its a strong, giddyyup! motor. Sure, if you can afford the 5.4l, get it. But if you cant, you wont be disapointed by the 4.6l, trust me!
How do the three engines translate to cubic inches, like I grew up with. I have had three F150 SCs in the past. One with a 351ci and two with the 302s.
My new '97 has the 4.2L which equals ??

I think the 4.2 is 256 C.I.

4byFord: Agree with your last line totally. Where are you in Canada?

If you're looking to save a few dollars--well, more than a few, go with the V-6. I had a 1998 F-150 work truck with the V-6 and 3.55 towing axle. I pulled a 3000 pound trailer from Mississippi to New Mexico when the truck was new with no trouble. I have pulled a loaded horse trailer--4000-4500 pounds--in the New Mexico mountains with little struggle.
I Superchipped the truck a few months after purchase. Main reason was I wanted better transmission performance. The stock computer program does not give you very good passing power at speed (over 60mph). The Superchip firmed up my shifts for towing, but also allowed for a double downshift at speed so that I could get up and go very nicely.
Get the V-6, save the money, buy a Superchip and a few horses! :-)

I have the 5.4L for heavy towing purposes only. The engine is a pig on gas. The difference in fuel mileage between a 4.2 and 4.6 in minimal. Go with the 4.6. You might get better package discounts with the v6. It's your 20,000-25,000 bucks.

175hp? I got the info from "Carnet de Route"
(A good source) I double checked to see if I made a typo but that's what it reads in the book. The engine is a 5.0 ACC-16-IE. My brother has a caprice with the 5.0 (I know it's a big car), but it is really slow on take off. A lot slower than my truck.
I ventured into unknown territory and checked the gmc web site. I guess they made some changes since 1997. I will edit my previous post to show the 2k models.

Like I said before the V8 is the only way to go even if you use more gas but you will have alot more fun when you floor it with a V8 than you would with any whimpy V6.
