My dealer uses Kendall 10-30 and has told me that they automatically assume liability for any warranty claims related to oil viscosity.

I don't use anything but Quakerstate in my '67 Cougar and wouldn't think of using any other oil unless it was a synthetic. Check out this link on engine oils and you'll see that the differences in the oils are very nominal. http://www.performanceunlimited.com/oilchart.html

We have 3 local quick lube places. The first one originaly opened as a Quaker State 15 min lube. They changed to Pennzoil less than a month after opening. The owner said the extremely bad reputation Quaker State got from the huge problems they caused in the 70's will always follow them around. The other two are Valvoline and Mobil fast lubes. The reason I diss Quaker State is because the oil murdered my 1972 Camaro RS in 1975.

Question

What in the world is this "snake oil" that people refer to?

"Snake oil" is an old timey term for a medicine or product sold by traveling sales men or gypsies that has no real benefits and was really just a con. It has become synonymous with a product that is represented as a cure all but has no real benefit.

The dealer I bought from uses 10W30 and went so far as to publish their own scheduled maintenace book for severe duty. I also noticed they were not installing Motorcraft Oil Filters. I now do the oil & filter myself.

I called my dealership today to schedule my first oil change..I told them I wanted to bring my own oil(Mobil 1), but I couldn't bring my own filter. They said that a Motorcraft filter would be required to sustain the warranty if there were any problems. They also said that Ford recommends Kendall oils for all their products. I still think they get whatever oil they get cheapest in bulk.

Well did dfirst change myself my texaco rep (the shop i work at use 's texaco) gave me some havoline sythentic to try 5-40wt used motorcraft filter will keep board posted if i have problems. Mileage is 2500. They have it in 5-30 as well he just didn't have that at ware house will try it next time. I believe the important thing is the five wt for the start up, a small amount of extra protection when warmed up can't hurt it.

I don't know if Kendall is the cheapest but a local mechanic that worked on my Stang swears by the stuff. Says it's better than Castrol and some other brands. He also pointed out that Pennzoil was the worst of the bunch. I forgot what the reasons were because he went into technical stuff w/ oils.

Most dealers carry their oil in bulk and most of them use the private labled stuff ie ford-motorcraft, gm-valvoline/goodwrench which is available in bulk by local distributors. givin that, they can buy whatever oil they want but the oems usually make it worth thier while to stick w/the private label by having it qualify toward thier overall parts programs, ect. I'm not sure who is packageing the motorcraft oil but as long as it is API SJ/SH & ILSAC GF-2/GF-1 approved and changed regularly you should br in good shape.
personally i like Havoline.

Steve g,

Want me to tell you who bottles oil for Ford/GM/ hold your ear close so I can whisper (LOW BIDDER) in any given year it could be Citgo,Castrol,Valvoline,Quaker State, or any of the many others. Ford cannot void your warranty if you use oil that meets the minimum standard in the owners manual also on the subject is oil filters go to this site for a study in filters you might be suprised who makes filers for Ford. http://minimopar.simplenet.com/oilfilterstudy.html
I'm thru rantin!

If you don't care that the oil the dealer is putting into your brand new engine is contaminated from all the bulk handling it encounters, go ahead and let them dump all the water particulates, human hairs, environmental dust, paint chips, rust, wood chips etc. etc. right into your crankcase!

I much rather prefer to pour it out of a sealed quart container that only got handled once from the distiller to the plastic container.

Our group at work provide oil analysis for the oil that goes into precision machine tools and hydrolic systems. I have seen the analysis reports and microscope photos first hand as I myself am level two certified in "tribology" (The study of interacting surfaces in motion) "Lubrication"

We used to buy a lot of bulk oil, The problem was the brand new oil had to be filtered for over twenty four hours at times to get it clean enough to put into a machine tool. The other problems that occur from bulk oil is if it is not all used at once, the additive packages actually settle to the bottom of the drum and then your oil is useless. Yes, oil has a shelf life! This usually takes about 2-3 years of course, but why chance it? use it fresh out of the quart container and demand your dealer does too!

The chart that Basshunter links to is out of date on some lubricants, as well as the other one that is on the board. I am currenly updating this chart on my own and there are many changes to the oils that have been listed. If anyone is interested what I have found out already I can email it to anyone or I can post it on the board. Whichever is perfered.
