I agree on the Tundra...

I thought about this last night. It makes sense you only had a problem at startup. The check valve keeps oil at the top end, and the higher viscosity would take longer to get oil pressure.

Don't feel bad if you make a mistake. I can assure you I have made more than my share.

That goes for anyone. I was fortunate enough to be able to screw up donated cars. (You know, the ones that fell off the truck.)

Well the 5W30 Mobil 1 and the FL820s filter seems to have fixed the problem. I feel much better now and the engine is quieter overallwhen it is cold. I was getting worried for a while.

seacrow, I agree, despite my problems with
the blue smoke and rough idling at times, I cannot accept that something is horribly wrong cause mine purrs like a kitten 98 percent of the time. EGR continues to recur in my mind. I do think unburnt fuel can be blue smoke. Just got it back from dealer,
vacuum check was perfect along with all other diagnostics. Stay in touch,

andrew, make sure you have the proper filter and oil. After a cold start last night, I was able to confirm that my problem is definitely solved. And there is a thread called "FYI 5.4 owners" that talks about the wiring harness next to the A/C accumulator. I read it and fiddled around with the wiring harness in question and my truck did idle smoother. Do a search for that thread and try what it says. Good Luck

I've had trucks that used a quart every 1500 miles and never seen any blue smoke, no leaks either. Ford says 1 quart for 800 miles driven is acceptable, but visual blue smoke is not. Blue smoke not only indicates a problem but is embarrasing!

Seacrow,

I believe you have taught me something here about filter with the drainback valve. I would have never guessed it but since I have always used the Ford LS820 series of filters I never experienced your problem.

It appears to me that using these filter types is more critical than previously thought on the Ford OHC engines.

seacrow...glad your problem went away with the 5W-30 Mobil 1 and the 820s filter.

I agree with you Dunbarton...I decided to try a FRAM filter (with the PLASTIC anti-drain valve)in my 5.4L 98 F-150..and shortly after installation...I had very noticeable engine chatter at start up. I immediately switched back to the FL820S filter..and the problem went away. I am going to stick with the 820s filter for my 2000.

seacrow,

Just to be safe you may want to reset your computer by unplugging the battery and leaving the lights on until all power is drained. I say this because your computer may have tried to compensate for your earlier problem. Hope all goes well!

seacrow: I'm a firm beliver in having oil analises taken every 3000 miles (right before each oil change) This will relieve your mind if everything checks out OK and if it doesn't then it usually gives you fair warning of up coming problems. An analises doesn't cost much and if you continue to use the same lab then they will compair your previous samples with the new one and tell you how your engine is progressing. I started having them done on the F150 because I was using 10w40 oil. Showed absolutly no problems at all with that weight oil. When my new truck comes in, it too will get the oil analized.

Well I will tell you guys about my blue smoke. I get a blue puff every morning along with all kinds of strange and eerie sounds. Anyway I took it to my dealer and they told me it was normal, because they started a new one and had the same results. From my point of view they are all full of ****, but what are ya gonna do? As for me all I can do is bend over and take it from the rear. Overall I love my truck, and wouldn't take a thing for it!

OK, it has been a few days and this thing is quiet and smooth like it was when it was new. It seems like it even runs stronger. It makes absolutely no noise and no smoke. I was thinking I may have had some of the bad batch of Mobil 1. The oil only had about 3200 miles on it and it was extremely dirty and it felt funny, kinda gritty feelin. I did the last oil change about three days before someone posted the recall on the bad batch of Mobil 1. I did not keep the bottles so I could not confirm it. Who knows? I am glad to get it back to normal! I honestly can't believe the difference this oil change made and I won't use anything but Mobil 1 5W30 and the 820s filter from now on.

Tina, I think I will get the old oil analyzed. I think I saw a kit at Autozone, where do you get your stuff to send in the sample? Thanks for the computer info Triton 46, I may do that when I get time to see if it makes a difference.

I am glad this is over, thanks for the support everyone.

seacrow: I get the analisis kit from Catapillar. My husband works there and he just picks one up when I need to have it done. Check the yellow pages for this type business and start calling them to see if any of them take out-side vehicals oil for analisis.
