What the hell is this blue smoke now??
OK, now I am pissed off!
This morning I went out to move my truck to mow the lawn, started it and had the lifter knock for the 4th or 5th time. It ran for about 5minutes while I was hooking up a trailer and I shut it off. Then I restarted it about an hour later and BANG BANG BANG! The damn thing would hardly run and it let out a huge cloud of blue smoke. It finally stopped after about five minutes.
Even if it is the oil filter drainback valve, a simple fix, it is still one of the stupidest things I've heard of. I never had any problems with the Rangers I had with something as dumb as an oil filter, if that is the problem. I don't know guys, this sounds like a hell of a lot more than just lifter noise. We'll see I guess. I might just be dumping this one soon. Man this pisses me off! It did it in front of my neighbor (who has a T-100) and several other people who immediately asked me how much I paid for the fancy cropduster. I respond about the oil filter and they say, "yeah....ok Jason"
Gotta love that!

Man, I feel your pain.
Frankly these trucks are nothing but pieces of ****. They aint building them like they use too and Ford is running on reputation ALONE. I feel that Ford is building these as 3-5 year throw away trucks and sometimes they dont even last that long. ' just venting, but I'm defintely not impressed..not at all.
Anyway, I hope yours comes around

I dont know what to say. It just foors me when I here this stuff. I have owned 7 or so trucks and so far this is the best of the group. I love my F150 (4.6 romeo). It runs great and no problems so far (41,000 miles). This makes me sick to here about these problems.

Mine has done the same thing. 4.6 romeo.
cold starts, valve clatter for 2=5 secs.
on two occasions, cloud of blue smoke,
engine missing, finally evened out after
15 seconds. How do you get THIS addressed?
My email is aschubert@dellnet.com if you
find an answer.
Thanks

Dennis, LOL, no evictions for a couple of months now. I was pretty pissed when I posted last night.
Dondo 7, Overall I am impressed with many things on these trucks, the build quality, the materials, the looks, etc. But not the giant puff of blue smoke and the banging noises in the engine on cold startup.
mlaugh, I am changing the oil today and using the FL820s filter, "s" as in "smoke free startups", I hope. I can accept small problems but for 25K I won't accept blue smoke. However, I realize that I may have used the wrong filter at the last oil change, if that is it, I will just write it off as experience.

Engine "missing", or "bucking" at startup seems to indicate bad plugs, or wires. Blue smoke = unburnt fuel, or oil "blowby". Too rich a mixture of fuel ( computer off somehow) - Maybe bad EGR. All I can think of.

'crow,
I too am upset with what your truck and Andrew's is doing. I also agree with btr about the oil filter but maybe I stand to learn something after your filter change.
You guys using a synthetic oil at the recommended weight?
Don't want to aggravate an already testy problem but if your engines don't sound like piston slap I don't what else it could be.

I am using 10W30 Mobil 1. They did not have any 5W30 so I thought I could get away with it but maybe not. Even if it is the filter drainback valve or the oil being a little too thick it is still stupid. I did not have time to change the oil today after all so I will not know until tomorrow.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see where the oil filter would have anything to do with burning oil (blue smoke). Especially when you consider where it is located (low and to the front).

I agree with btr. Blue smoke is oil burning and a filter should have no effect. Black smoke is fuel. Thus, the banging and smoke would cause me great concern. It's the missing that seems the most interesting. Blowby could be the culprit. If so, then rings &/or piston problems??
Don't use 5w-30. My girlfriends dad is a certified mechanic, and he told me to use 10-30 all the time. 5w-30 is not thick enough for that engine, eventhough ford calls for 5w-30. The only reason i could see using 5w-30 is for extreme cold weather. I used 10w-30 in my 93 and i got 160,000 miles on it. The only thing i had to replace that had to do with the oil, was the oil pan gasket. another great ford flaw. years 92-96 oilpan gaskets suck
Hey seacrow, I feel ya too!
Did you find you had not used an 820s? That might account for the noise. Seriously, IMO, I would stay away from 10w30. This is not a pushrod engine. If the followers do not pump up, the valves wont open, (at least fully) right?
I have talked to techs that have replaced 4.6L engines that have locked up due to 10w30. Before the dust settles, Ford will have metallurgical testing done, and find you have not used 5w30. Most likely, Ford will not pick up the tab.
What about Calvin doin' his thing on the rice burnin' neighbors? hehehe!!!!
Do ya think they can read the oil filter application guide?
And yes, those oil pan gaskets suck!

Thanks for the input guys. I will know for sure today, as I will finally have time to change the oil today. I picked up Mobil 1 5W30 and an 820s filter. The filter I used last time was a Purolator Pure ONE, I thought they were the same but maybe not. Crash, what you say makes sense and I guess that may be the price to pay for OHC engines. I would still gladly put up with this stuff before driving a Tundra. I will follow up to see if the oil and filter will solve the problem. BTW, it hasn't done it in two days and yesterday I was doing almost 100mph down I-75. The engine runs too good sometimes to be F**cked-up.
