My 89 f150 is slow

There are actually new aluminum Cleveland heads and there is also a new block that has an improved oiling system and thicker walls so it can be bored and stroked to as muck as 440ci. If your on a budget simply find a 2v 351C and rebuild it add a 4 barrel intake a nice cam and you easily have a 350 hp engine. All Iron. Doable for a couple of grand.

It depends on a ton of things. If the 302 is in great shape with good compression a set of 165cc heads or such from tfs or edelbrock performer heads with matching intake for truck with a bigger throttle body and a small cam with a good free flowing exhaust as well as good quality ignition parts will really open up the power of a 302. Minimum exhaust tubing diameter should be 2-1/4 with duals and up to a 3" tailpipe if running single exhaust. Depending on tire size and if it has a 3 speed transmission 3:55 fears should put revs around 2400-2600 at 60mph. Remember the lower the rear gear the better engine breaking there is because of increased rpm. If you do a lot of highway driving with a 3 speed trans 3:08 or 3:27 is a good choice. If you have a 4 speed OD run 3:73 or 4:10 as this will make a huge improvement on low speed torque and drivability. My dad and I have run and worked with 302's and 351's all of our lives. They will live forever if built right and taken care of. Resist the urge to go too big with the cam as it will push the power too high up the rpm range to be useable for a truck. Talk with a reputable trans co and they will help you choose the right torque converter also.

I last over hauled my 351c for about $1200. I didnt get new pistons because there was very little wear. I never hardened the seats and know lots of guys with Clevelands that dont I never had an issue and dont know of anyone who has. I think with new pistons $1800 or so for the engine build only. Gonna have to buy an intake headers carb decent ignition etc on top of that.
