Cam Phaser/ Lash Adjuster

I know there has to be 100 threads on this, however, ive looked at about 100 and cant find my answer. maybe someones discovered the problem by now. my truck rattles, BAD, when I start it. but then it goes away after a couple of seconds then and nothing but injector noise. what is causeing the noise? I use 5-20 oil. motorcraft filter. its NOT the starter. i climed under it, had someone start it, nothing underneath. just under the hood. so any ideas? is it phasers, lash adjusters, both? something else? thanks.

I see you show a 2006 F150 is this the truck you are talking about. What engine and how many miles will help. If the noise is loudest at the front of the engine it could be the timing components or chains or FEAD accessories. If the noise is under the cam covers then suspect lash adjusters. You may want to listen to the FEAD pulleys (belt tensioner, belt pulleys, alt, p/s etc. as well) maybe remove the serp belt and see if the noise is gone as well. If so that could indicate a FEAD pulley problem. Locate the noise and the rest is pretty easy. Good luck.

it could be your oil leaking down internally causing your timing chain tensioners to gain slack and when it builds oil pressure it goes away.

The 'O' rings in the chain adjusters may be worn causing them to relax the chains as in overnight or longer. Just a possibility with that mileage.

That would eliminate all the 'outside' stuff...The slack adjusters may be your problem..'O' ring leak-by

Ok now try to pin it down to under the cam covers or behind the front cover. your getting warm.... Has this been making the noise since your last oil and filter change or has it been there for sometime and after numerous oil and filter changes? Reason I ask is even though you are using a Motorcraft oil filter it's possible to get one that is defective and allowing the oil to bleed down. If its a recent noise try changing the oil filter with another Motorcraft.

Mine has done the same thing since I bought it with 80,000 miles on it. I keep routine oil changes (every 5000 miles) using motorcraft oil & filter. I had a mechanic tell me that the 5.4 had a design flaw and causes the oil to leak down regardless of the filter you use. I hope someone can answer this question.
