This is an 03 5.4L. What the heck are these for?

It almost looks like an airbag/crash sensor, did a few searches with a partial part number and came up with absolutely nothing. Looked up a few wiring diagrams and it looks to be in the right spot for said sensor. Wish I had a little more info to share with you.

Wow ... So I don't feel as stupid as I thought. Never would have guessed that!

There is one on the front of each head.... I guess it kind of makes sense now that I think about it. Where's all the noise generated.... ignition!

Not unless his headlight is mounted to the engine.
