Is it possible that you somehow ended up with the wrong dip-stick in your engine?

Did someone put a larger pan on it?

Another thought is the "O" ring on the dipstick handle portion. Sometimes the "O" will adhere to the inside of the tube and come off the dipstick but remain stuck inside the tube. This could prevent the stick from seating completely into the tube even though it seems like it's down completely because it stops hard after hitting the "O" ring.

I'm wondering the same thing. There is no way it makes sense any other way. He has owned the truck for 2 years and does his own maintenance so it rules out "being oblivious".

It HAS to be either the wrong dipstick, wrong dipstick tube, or an aftermarket deeper pan. Pull the stick, see if you can find a part number on it.

now, i know what your thinking. does this idiot know how to read a dipstick?
well the answer is, yes! i took the old girl to walmart just incase it was low from some weird leak and put another quart in. just to be sure i waited an hour when i got home and drained the oil. 6 quarts came out! thats 7 quarts total with the filter! put 6 quarts back in, let it settle, no reading again! put 1/2 in let it rest, got a tiny reading on the stick?! like a millimeter! what the f#%ck?! any ideas guys?
I know this is very old post... I am having a similar issue. I recently replaced my dipstick and it came from ford all coiled up... so it is slightly bent. And I get very different readings ranging from needing oil(below the lower dot) or perfectly between the dots or even over full depending on the orientation. What was your solution? Should I straighten my dipstick?
