Could really use some help on what is going on with my 2000 f150 5.4l
Today my wife was driving my truck and all at once it started making this bad noise on her. When I got home from work to look at it, it had no oil at all on the dip stick. I can not understand why it doesn't have any oil on the stick. It doesn't smoke not even a little on start up, and it doesn't leak. Checked radiator, and although the fluid looked brown, i assume its from rust, seeing that oil in the radiator is usually foamy/milky correct? So I can not for the life of me see where my oil went. Anyways I wanted to hear the sound so before i started it I put 5 qts of oil in, it filled it well above the full mark (had a schedule oil change tomorrow used cheap oil for this test) When I started it the sound it makes is loud but doesn't make any sense to me. It doesn't sound like a knock like a hammer hitting metal, nor a rattle, it also doesn't sound like valves clattering. It sounds like a massive exhaust leak but then again doesn't, thats the best way i can describe it. It speeds up with acceleration but doesn't have a back off knock like a rod or valves it evenly speeds up and slows down. I would say exhaust leak, but seeing that my oil was almost all gone with no evidence of where when this happen, plus no visible sign of a exhaust leak, im at a loss for whats going on, any help would be greatly appreciated..
Forgot to add, when i let it idle, for about a minute it seems to idle slightly less then normal, then it idles real low to the point of dying with a weird sputter sound.
Btw, if it turns up to be a rod, whats the opinion, rebuild, or replace?

If it ends up being a rod. You will have to rebuild or replace.
Sounds kinda like a blown out spark-plug. That doesn't explain the low oil but check your COPs to see if one has ejected from the motor.

I'd put my guess at it being a spark plug getting ready to blow out. You have some time, but will notice it getting worse. I'd drain the oil and change it besides this and do the coolant too. The tick is probably the spark plug as mentioned but it sounds like a bad Coil on plug too possibly.
Its not really a tick, its more like a well its hard to describe. Think of maybe a 1 inch hole in the exhaust manifold type sound added in to that sound a chain striking the ground, not metal on metal but a chesssss thump type sound. Is there anyway i can upload audio? if so i might try that. Its really loud and aggressive, but again doesn't sound like a knock and rattling.
Still sounds like a plug blew out to me. Audio clip would be nice though. Wouldnt take a whole lot of time for you to pinpoint where it is coming from with a mechanics stethoscope or a piece of a broom handle. While it is running, probe around and listen. Youll find it. Also, feel the top of each cop. The other issue is your oil loss. You had to put 5qt's in it to bring it back to full?? If I read that right. Could also be an issue of the lack of oil, loss of oil pressure.

If it burned that much oil and it's making that much noise, you have a major problem. I'd start by pulling the spark plugs and doing a compression test. I foresee a rebuild/replacement engine in your future. You may want to get the assistance of a local qualified mechanic/technician.
Ok, based on all the replies stating it was a spit plug, i just finished taking off the passenger side COP and looking inside, It is a spit plug, so that is kinda good news. But the bad news it is on number 4 last one under the firewall. I can do a heli coil and felt confident in doing it if it was on the front 2 where i could see, but being the last one im a little timid in doing it my self.
Has anyone done this their selves on number 4? Also what is a good estimate if I have it done? I already have everything off and out of the way fuel rail ect and have access to the heli coil. Should i use Lock-N-Stitch instead?
Thanks

The only thread repair that works and lasts is a TIMESERT. Contact Galaxy, who is a member here - he rents a Timesert kit.
That still doesn't explain where 5 quarts of oil went...........
Pull all the plugs and retorque them to 28 ft/lb, and do NOT use antiseize.
