Engine "Whistling" at higher RPMs

Hey this could be anything It could even be a window that's not shut tight Try runing up your rpms with the truck sitting still and see if you still hear it or if you can narrow down where the sound is coming from!!

It's coming from the engine compartment and I hear it when I rev the engine at a standstill, or when I'm accelerating. It's seems directly related to engine rpms.

Question Engine "Whistling" at higher RPMs

Have started to notice a "whistling" sound when I'm accelerating and the engine is approaching high RPMs. There doesn't appear to be any power loss associated with this sound. Has anbody had the same problem and if so what was the cause? Thank you for any help.

marky mark. I see you changed out your air filter. make sure all connections are tight. it sounds like the whistle is caused by incoming air. you could also get someone to race your engine and use a spray bottle with water and look for leaks. apply a small amount of water on the suspected area and see if it's "inhaled" into the engine. keep us informed.

I just bought a 1999 F150 S/C 4.6 v8 auto and I have the whistling noise too. The dealer's mechanics have looked into it and know that Ford Corporate has a team looking into the problem. The whistling can't be reproduced unless I'm accelerating, actually moving in the vehicle, and it does it in forward or reverse. I've also noticed that when the transmission switches gears into a low RPM that the noise goes away, or gets much quieter, until the RPM's go up.

If anyone else's mechanics, or you, find a cure let me know. It sounds like something on the tranny/engine that sucks air only when the vehicle is in motion, maybe that means a load on the tranny/engine.

I too have the whistling with my '99 F150 4x4 ORP 4.6L V8. My Airaid FIPK should arrive next week, so I'll see if it's still there after installing that.

From what you describe it sounds very much like the same problem. I only hear it when accelerating (moving) not at a standstill like I originally thought. It's at the edge of the RPM scale. I checked the air filter connections and they're pretty tight. Let me know what you find out.

Just curious, have any/all of you with this problem reported it to the dealer and been told that they can't find the solution, they're waiting for the Ford engineering team to come up with a solution? I keep putting pressure on my dealership to do something, but the more I push, the less interested they seem.

Also, I can make the whistling go away around 40 mph if I switch into neutral. Even in drive, with the brakes on hard, I can't make it whistle, only when I move. Maybe the clutch? Who knows.

It's definately air intake related. I installed my Airaid FIPK this weekend, and my whistle went away. Just a nice, loud, easy-breathing, engine sound now.

I told Ford Corporate about your replacement of the air intake solution for the whistling problem. Part of their reply was...

<<<<He stated that the dealership has received messages from Ford Engineering regarding this particular procedure of installing a cam filter in the engine. It seems Ford does not recommend this procedure because the oil placed in the filter may contaminate the mass air flow sensor and cause greater problems.

Lastly, he stated that he has been on the phone with the techical hotline and no permanent repair procedure has been developed to date.

He did state that you may put the filter in at your own accord, however, if it is ever linked to a repair that would normally be
covered under warranty, that particular repair may be voided.>>>>

Is the contamination of the mass air flow sensor a *real possibility* or is its Ford's uneasy feeling about aftermarket parts?

One last thing. Is there an aftermarket filter for high air flow that doesn't contain oil, so the mass air flow sensor won't have any possibility of damage?
