6.2L Question!
6.2L Question!
Anyone running a 2011 F-150 with the 6.2L, Not a Raptor?? I am curious on how it tows, and fuel mileage. I know its a big V8 and fuel mileage shouldnt be an issue, but its always nice to know. I am having trouble deciding between a EcoBoost, 5.0L or the 6.2L.
Having never driven any of them, but done tons of homework plus the addition of my own logic from a trailer owner and long time gear head; the only decision should be between the EB or the 6.2. Both out tow the 5.0, and any fuel mileage concerns should theoretically drive you towards the EB. As for the 6.2...go big or go home. There's no replacement for cubic inches.
As you probably know, stroke yields torque. Regardless of any published numbers, the 6.2 with a stroke of 3.74 versus the EB stroke of 3.45 wins in real world towing. You also have 3 pulses of power per revolution with the EB versus the 4 pulses of power with the 6.2. The 6.2 is going to pull better, longer, and be a happier engine if you pull a lot and heavy loads. If it's just an occasional pull, I'd opt for the 5.0 with the 3.73 gears. ALL.....restate that, ALL direct injection engines have a design flaw and that is there is no way to clean the soot, carbon, and combustion contaminants from the intake or the intake valves. The injector is placing fuel directly into the combustion chamber and by-passing the intake and intake valve. No fuel additive will work as it never gets to the parts. This is going to be an issue with these engines just like it has with other makers.
It's already an issue with several brands like BMW that took their direct injection engines off the market. Cooper no longer warrants anything with the intake system getting dirty effecting performance. They consider it an owner maintenance item at the cost of $800.00 per 10,000 miles. The EB is no different.

My dad has a Harley 150 with the 6.2 - he averages 14 MPG, but he is on the highway most of the time. I drove it from Daytona to Indiana and got 14.1 on the interstate. It has loads of torque. I had a few cars try to race with me on the interstate, it does not matter when you open the throttle - that thing pulls hard. Sounds good, lots of fun, but I don't enjoy going to the gas station that much. I would go EB if the payment book was sent to my address.

The EB gets a lot better mileage than the 6.2 unloaded. However, I think the 6.2 will get better mileage towing heavy. Towing performance should be pretty similar, with the EB pulling ahead at high altitudes, where you can't beat forced induction.
Well I have driven the 5.0L and it will put it all over my 5.4L!!! I have driven the 6.2L and yes you guys are right, it pulls hard!! I work at a Ford dealership. We have sold alot of EB trucks. Some 5.0L's, but more EB. The customers that have the 5.0L are saying 14-15 around town driving and around 17.5 to 18 on highway trips, and I live in WV, so there are plenty of mountains. I pull a 26ft camper and ready to by a 30ft camper. My F-150 does well with the weight, just the 5.4L and the 4spd auto trans leaves me needing more power. So this is why I am questioning myself on what motor to get. I am afraid of having a load behind my truck and the turbos on the EB failing, then u are screwed because u are depending on the turbos for ur power. Kinda like a diesel.
