Have no idea what you have for an engine, but, in reading the forums, if the plugs have been changed recently one might be loose or you could have an exhaust leak at the manifold. some more info would help.

Ticking huh? Could be a timing chain. Not highly likely but possible. I just worked on a truck the other day that had a ticking noise to it and it was the timing chain.

Get the Fram off there and see if it doesn't go away. The drain back valve is collapsing. Get a Motorcraft, Purolator or Wix. Just about anything but a Fram.

Yea, off the Fram. Hopefully it's not to late. That's the Orange can of death for these engines.

Amazing. One more time. And the Fram guy argued that it could not be.

I went to a guys house a couple weeks ago and removed four broken sparkplugs from his 2006 f-150. He calls me a few days later stating that he has a cold start knock first startup in the morning. I asked what type of filter and he said Fram, had him change it to a Motorcraft and the problem went away. A month ago I timed a 4.6 for a guy. He called with the same noise concern told him the same thing and problem went away after he installed a Motorcraft filter. I have to wonder how many of the cold start knock engines we had returned to our plant from dealership pulls that we spent days trying to find the root cause but never could duplicate the problem were from Fram filters. This issue has to be costing customers and even the auto companies a boatload of money.

why would the oil filter matter?
My 2010 4.6L 2v started making cold start noise. Very definitely a lifter. Started after changing plastic intake and washing out the heads. Had also switched oils. Thought it was the cheap oil and perhaps some tars that went from the head down into the motor. Marvels mystery oil stops the noises and so does seafoam. But now im back on the better synthetic oil and 0 additives and the noise is worse. So, time to pen her up and start looking around and consulting people.
