why would the oil filter matter?
Because Fram filters do not have a proper anti-drainback valve. This causes dry starts. Put a Motorcraft filter on it and see if it helps.

I was planning on trying it before taking the truck apart.
I thoughts that's what I would hear too. But the filter is oriented drain side up. Not strait up and down but not passed 45 deg either. When I do oil changes I always get it off over half full and the rest falls into the drain pan. Doesn't seem likely to be the culprit but, for 15 bucks why not try?

A Motorcraft oil filter is a lot less than 15 bucks. A FL820S is $3.97 at Walmart.

Make sure to get rid of your Frams! Don't let this happen

FRAM gave me the tick (I think). A Motocraft filter resolved it
