Engine Swap

Is the intake strong enough to lift a 4.6 out if you run lifting straps through them? If not whats the best option?

Remove the intake and use the alternator mount for the front and one of the 2 upper bell housing bolts on the block side. I pulled mine with the tranny still in the truck. Once the bolts were removed from the bell housing, you can reverse them but using shorter bolts... Like this

Or look at mxr181's post of his removal, same area but with straps..

Short on time trying to cut as much as possible. I guess lifting without removing the intake is a bad idea huh? Was gonna put straps through the runners on the intake to lift it.

I'm not sure what engine you have but if it is a composite intake, I wouldnt trust it. These motors weight in at like 5-600lbs. The composite intakes were known to crack under their own stress, let alone as a lifting point. Who knows though.. it could hold up. But why not remove it, can't take anymore than 15-20 mins to have it off.

If it is a 2v 5.4L, there is little to no chance it will come out without the intake off. If you notice in both the pics I showed you, the intake is off. That wasnt for the reason of needed a better pick point. It's because it wont fit with it on. Unless you remove the whole front core support.

intakes are just plastic, your risking injury trying to lift the eingine from the intake.

it takes like half an hour tops to take the intake off...and trust me I just pulled a 4.6 & a 5.4 and then put a 5.4 back in my truck...spend a little time up front and it will save you more time in the end than you think! If you are pulling the motor and trans together you can try lifting it from the headers (thats how I pulled the 5.4 out of the donor truck - but it also doesnt have a core support so it came right out the front of the truck). honestly after going in & out multiple times in the last week, I would pull the motor & trans separately and definetly pull that intake manifold! while its out replace the gaskets (they are cheap) and you will be good to go!
