Pulstar Plugs Experiment
Pulstar Plugs Experiment
Well after researching and calling around, I decided i'm going to try the spark plug swap to the Pulstars. I have a 2007 F150 XLT 4.6L with 153,xxx miles and I found some Pulstars for a little over $100 on AutoAnything and they have like 10 - 5 Star Reviews on them. I did some research on multiple forums about these plugs in the Tritons but sounds like nobody knows for sure how they are. I asked the dealership about the plugs and they said that the spark plug breaking while taking them out isn't a big problem, it is putting the replacements in is the problem. He told me that the spark plugs for the f150's only have about 4 threads on them and when putting them in... "Tighten them as hard as you can until the point you get scared" to prevent blow out. And of course they said only to use ford plugs, but who knows if thats just dealership talk so you only buy thier products and "not to put aftermarket intakes or exhaust" and crap.
Pulstar says on there website about the mileage and horsepower you get from them, so I'll record what I get from them. They also say this on thier website:
•Satisfaction in 30 days or your money back
•Pulse plugs last 100,000 miles and/or 4 years
•Will not harm your engine or void the warranty
So hopefully they are trustworthy if worst case scenario happens. I'm still deciding to have a shop do them or myself. My quote from a shop was $200 to replace the plugs. So ill keep you updated with my journey!

You're dealing with a lot of misinformation with this one. Only the 5.4 3v 2004-Early 2008 has the breaking plug problem. Only the V8 prior to 2003 have the blowout problem due to too few threads. Why in the world you would even consider any plug other than the Moorcraft for a 4.6 is beyond me. If a dealer truly told you that about your engine, you need to find another dealer.

Bluejay - When I called around for shop estimates, a lot of them said that the 4.6 also had that problem but they are probably wrong. The dealership guy probably didn't know what he was talking about either but hey its the only ford dealer in my town. I'm mostly doing this because they drop down in price over time, claim more power and mpg, and love to modify.
I'm trying to find more information on the plugs and i found a guy with a titan used NGK vs Pulstar on a dyno and the pulstar gave him more horsepower. If you want to take a look, click here: http://www.titantalk.com/forums/tita...o-testing.html

Don't be quite so quick to be a nay sayer. The iridium of the Pulstar means it has less resistance in the plug itself utilizing more of the energy into a spark. Because all iridium plugs are of the fine wire type, the spark is going to be hotter. Considering the OP has a 4.6 and 153,000 miles on the clock, he might just see some improvements in the fuel mileage and fewer emissions. But that's only going to happen if he does mostly stop and go driving. Considering he has the high mileage and it's a 3 year old truck, I doubt that's his driving style. The biggest issue I've heard about these plugs is the crappy construction. They have a tendency to break at the insulator. As compared to any other iridium plug, I see no advantages.

I just ordered the plugs today. My driving style is is mostly stop and go actually. I drive 1 mile to work and drive maybe 5 miles max to a destination for anything. My truck was a fleet truck before, that explains the mileage.
I've read a lot that mod motors don't like a lot of plugs but I decided to switch to E3 plugs this time. So far just a thousand miles but with no problems at all. When it's cold it idles at 10:1 then 12:1 and finally 14.6:1. I don't drive very far for most trips and haven't seen any problems as of yet.
In addition to shoddy contruction, my biggest concern with these plugs is the Marketing Maskirovka shown here: http://www.pulstar.com/technology.htm
These trucks all use a multi-spark ignition system, OEM. Adding a capacitive element is completely useless and may even be detrimental. ( I wont even mention that any capacitive element small enough to fit within a plug's body will not even approach the required energy storage capacity to begin with, for use in a non-MS system).
This is, in point of fact, Classic Marketing BS 101. And folks fall for it each and every day.
OP - For yer engine, either stay with OEM Motorcraft fine-wire double-platinums, or for the very best plug money can buy, go with Denso Iridium - IT16.

Regardless - good luck with yer experiment. And yeah - find a dealership that has a clue.

Ah kapoosh. He's offering himself to be a guinea pig. If he wants to lay down on the table, let him. Whether results are positive or negative, they're still important. Hell, I used to love to watch the old neighbor kid try to show me he could fly. He swore he could, and I encouraged him. Man that was fun to watch.
