5.4 to 4.6 swap

I have a 2004 4x4 with the 5.4 and auto tranny, and 160K. The truck was abused by previous owner, engine sounds like death (not the normal tick), and the tranny is slipping a little. I found a 4.6 out of a 2006 that has the tranny, transfer case and all the wiring (out of a wrecked truck) with 30K. Guy wants $1000 for it all. I think that's pretty good, if it can bolt it into my truck. Anybody know if it will work for me?

$1000 for a lowish mile engine with a tranny and a T-case? Sounds like a great deal to me, maybe too good to be true. Be sure to get the PCM for the 4.6. Everything will bolt right into it. Are you getting the whole truck or just those parts?

Going from a 5.4 to 4.6 isn't exactly something I would do. But for that price, its considerable. I picked up a 00 5.4 4x4 still mated to the tranny on what was a left over salvaged truck minus the cab that was involved in a light rollover with only 10k miles for 1500. Sold the tranny and rear axles (9.75) and made my money back, making the swap free. So there are good deals out there if you look around. That seems like a pretty good find to me...especially since you need the tranny also. Just be a tough decision to swap to a 4.6.

because the 5.4 is a 3 valve going to a 2 valve 4.6 is not going to be an easy swap...

It's really not that bad (I'm assuming). Everything will bolt right up, maybe not the drive shaft (or maybe it will). If he had to use the 4R75E tranny, it might be difficult.

I wouldn't do it because of the power differences, but if it's the only option....

Good deal IF its all in good shape. But your power loss makes it a bad deal imo. You might regret this

Yeah power dif is a bit of a big deal, but DAME for only1K and you need a transmission and maybe a new engine what the hell. I think any one would be hard pressed to just find the engine with those real low miles for a grand let alone the 2 of them.

If nothing else you could pick them up and flip it for a lot more. You might have to sit on it for the higher price but it should sell in time.

Good luck.

You'd be better off finding a 5.4 3v

If you have time and patients then you'll be able to do it.
The pcm was already mentioned to get.
The engine wiring harness would be the other thing you'll need.
Good luck.
