98, 4.6, misfire on acceleration

Been having a problem when I accelerate i have no power stutters and lugs the engine. So over the course of the last month or so a have changed or had changed,
spark plugs
wires
coil packs
fuel filter
one injector
I have used high test gas, tectronic gas treatment, lucas gas treatment

I just got it back yesterday, rode down the highway seemed to work fine, accelerated fine good power, then after turning off on the secondary roads it starts acting up again, not as bad but still chugging when I put on the gas.
I can and have been using it and can get along with just light acceleration.

the mechanic is stumped, I wonder if you guys have run across this or have any help for what to look for, could the computer be acting up?? thanks for any help. kevin

it has about 130k on it. and the engine light does come on actually blinks, then stays on steady. sometimes it will show #7 , or #5, last time it showed #1 and thats the injector he changed out.

Check fuel pressure.
Make sure you have MOTORCRAFT plugs ONLY in that engine.
Go over all ignition connections.
Clean MAF.
Suck test EGR valve.
Check PCV valve/ -Motorcraft valve only for that one.
Check your CATS for abnormal heat crackling and glowing at night.

Also, check out your wiring harness in relation to your AC accumulator. The wiring harness can sink resting on top of your accumulator connector. Over time this may bare a wire or two, but it doesn't necessarily have to do this to cause a problem. Your accumulators mag field can disrupt/cause havoc to your vehicles ignition.

So check the wires in that area, -and tie your harness back and away from the AC accumulator.

My bet is the wires, Check them using an ohm meter

The spark plug wires have been changed, and it still happened so he changed them again, thinking it was the wires, but that didn't help.
Is it worth changing the injectors, I have about 130k on the truck, will there be a benefit to changing them even if it is not the primary cause, they are a bit pricey. thanks for all the help. kevin

type of plug doesn't matter a lot as long as they are gapped properly and the proper heat range i run ngk's and it runs just fine...might want to do a compession check just to make sure you have proper compession on all cylinders..if you can have your truck tuned have them do the egr delete and then you can get rid of that whole system..your cats could be a problem like stated above so that would be something to check into as well

Won't that affect the emissions test that they do in this state? kevin

Types of plugs do matter, as bogus cross referenced heat ranges for the two valves do exist. Motorcraft, Denso and NGK's meet spec and they'll go the distance under normal conditions. Cross referenced "Heat Ranges" Autolite 103's and 104's do not meet Ford spec according to Honeywell. If they work at all, they won't go the distance. Bosch plugs would the worst, they can and have come apart inside the cylinders.

There's pictures and proofs on this site. They can be found via, -search. I've posted plenty of them myself. User torkum has posted pics as well.

any opinions on the fuel injector change out, I am going to try the others things first anyway.

I had this same problem right when i bought my 07 HD we couldn't figure out what the problem was. I brought it to two different Ford "stealerships" and the first one was a waste of time and $850 bucks. But the second dealership figured out i had a bent rod . Ran me another 3 grand to have that fixed. Not saying thats your problem but don't take it out of the running. I felt the problem most when i would start to speed back up from 40 mph. I felt the "stutter" in the engine. But then i would have an instant surge of power (Due to Supercharger. I believe). If I was you i'd have that checked though. Hope it's not a bent rod.

wow I hope not, if it gets to three grand, I would seriously consider getting rid of it! . well hopefully this weekend I will have time to check out the other things, get new plugs.

If it is the plugs, will the plug be black like not firing?

Okay, I changed out the spark plugs, all but #8, wanted to see if there was any difference before I went to all that trouble.
took her down the road, and she ran better, still sluggish, but not bucking, SO I will change #8 after she cools down.
here are some pics of the old spark plugs, they look worse in the pic, they were not fouled around the ceramic, or the metal, just around the threaded part.
