sparking sound from exhaust?

Ok, this sounds weird to me. I just changed my sparg plugs and coils. I installed motocraft platinum pluggs and accel coils. now when i give the truck gas it sounds like sparking coming out the exhaust. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this before. Please help. the truck runs and idols fine, just this noise has got me puzzled and a little worried. thanks.

I don't know but it sounds like there is unburned gas in the exhaust. I'm far from an expert but I would make sure that I plugged in everything I unplugged while changing those parts. I would also put the old coil back on for a test.

Interesting will be watching for more answers.

Are you sure its coming out of the exhaust and is not a loose cat heat shield? Crawl under and tap on the cats, listen for a rattling noise. There is a metal tab that can fall off and lay between the heat shield and cat and make noises as well. Not sure what else would give you a "sparky" noise.

Ive been hearing a noise similar to what your describing on my 99 5.4L. Fresh swap with only 11k miles now and lately during start up I can hear what sounds like an electrical connection but a bad one. Only thing I can describe it as is as if the starter had a loose connection, and its a fairly loud sparking sound. Thing is though, its on the drivers side. To me it sounds like its coming from the black relay box on the drivers side.

Once the truck is started I can hear again what sounds like a bad connection or some sort of consistent spark coming from the drivers side consistent with rpms. Like a REALLY loud injector is the only thing I can describe that as. I have tried to pin point it with a mechanics stethoscope, the loudest place I can find is at the Cats on drivers side. No noise under the valve cover, heads, bottom end... just the cat is where its most noticeable. Checked all connections. I have an extra set of exhaust with only 10k miles on it, thinking about swapping it out and see if it goes away.

Are you guys positive that all the sparkplugs were torqued enough when you installed them. A loose plug can make a loud ticking noise. Not sure why this would start happening right after the plugs were changed. The fan is not hitting a wire harness connector or anything? One time I flew down to Norfolk Truck Plant because they had a bad knock in a truck and were about to pull the engine. I started the truck sure enough there was a knock. I leaned over the front of the engine compartment and happened to look right at the problem. The fan was hitting a wire harness connector making the loud knock. All that way to find something so simple....Had they pulled the engine we never would have known what the problem really was. My point is that sometimes its something really simple but we tend to look for a major problem. I know I usually do when its my own vehicle. I can just see whatever it is costing me big bucks to repair. One more question. Did you have the intake manifold off for any reason?

Everytime I've had the noise I think is being described here, it has been a coil problem. But usually some power loss assosiated with it.

It's not the injectors is it? I hear mine clicking away when under the truck. Always have since the headers.

EDIT: - Maybe we are all going to blow up, - might be a ticking time bomb.

LOL ya never know jbrew. Reminds me when a buddy and I went bowhunting upnorth one time. We were hunting a pretty remote area and it was dead quiet. He get back to camp the first night and says he was hearing someone driving metal fence posts all day. Making a loud ticking noise. Asked if I had heard it as well. Nope not me. Anyway next day he hears it all day as well. Now I'm getting suspicous as there is no one around for miles here much less driving fence posts. Then it dawned on me. I said didn't you have an artifical heart valve installed last year That was it the valve was making a ticking noise in his chest and he thought someone was driving fence posts. He had never been in an environment that quiet before so never noticed it until then. Then he started blaming the noise as the reason he wasn't seeing any deer...LMAO.

Anyway yea, since I installed long tube headers, you can hear my Type 2 injectors ticking from under the truck, echoing thru the headers. I traced the noise, - sort of sounds like sparking. If you stethoscope your injectores , you might find the source. Iduno, it's crazy..

i stopped by an auto shop today and they told my i could have my wires mixed up or it is something with the injectors. I already checked my connections and they are all right. Guess i'm going to pull the injectors and check them and pull my plugs and re-install them to see if maybe there is something loose somewhere.

Just an FYI. If it's your injectors as jbrew suggests then no need to pull them. The ticking they make is normal.

Right! That's normal, mine are a bit louder because their Bosch Type 3's (19's), -the long skinny type. Not Type 2's like I mentioned earlier. Type 2's are original ,-different spray pattern, but they can be noisy as well.

You use a noid light to check those, but yea, the noise means they are working. Mine were new, - robbed them from a crate motor out of the Romeo plant , - noisy right from the start lol.
