Knocking sound..

Hey fellas,

Well last week i noticed;to say the least, my engine knocking right after start up. It will only knock when the engine is warm and for approximately 15 seconds. It is most noticeable after I back out of the driveway, put the truck in drive, and leave. The knock does go away shortly after i begin driving. If the engine is cold it wont knock, only when it is warm and has set for a while. It is not an exhaust leak, I have a few of those already. It is not a ticking sound like it would normally do in the morning. It is a louder knock. The truck uses about a quart of oil every 1500 miles but that can probably be expected with as many miles as i have. Any ways, any info as the what the knock may be would be appreciated..

Use the Advanced Search feature and enter Fram filter.

If you've been using a Fram filter, the damage may already be done. Change your oil and filter, use Motorcraft 5W20 and a Motorcraft filter (BOTH available at Walmart CHEAP) and see if it helps.

Your alright with the 5w/30 but I would not run 10w/30 at all.

These engines don't like too many aftermarket oil filters either and Fram is supposed to be the worst of them all if you believe what you read here. I stay away from them now. I had an aftermarket filter on mine when I bought it and it had a slight knock at start up. I put a motorcraft on the next oil change and the knock went away but like glc said the damage may be done.

The best thing is to try and locate the noise. Front cover area, cam cover, oil pan area, etc. Might be tough if it only does it when you start to drive but it would really help here if we had a location. Use an inexpensive mechanics stethescope if at all possible. Take care.

I just reread your post and I swear you said the noise lasted for 115 seconds, now it says 15 seconds(typo?). Fifteen sec's doesn't give you much time to listen but you still may be able to get us close to the area. front, back, top, bottom, etc.

I had done a search and heard allot about cam phasers, but none of those trucks were pre 2004. Thats why im stumped. If it turns out to be an expensive repair im considering just putting in a reman engine. But well see what happens. I like my truck too much to trade it in. Besides something comparable would run around 40 grand. Thanks everyone.
