Assuming the 4 old plugs still on the drivers will have similar readings, do you think this could be contributing to my knocking problem?

thanks
That's interesting. I have know idea how to judge that tho. But I do know that the higher the resistance = less currant flow. I guess that would make it a colder plug ?

Never though of testing the plug itself that way tho. I just flip it/ start/ then ground (old school lol).

Did you test the wires ? Resistance?

Well, I had to see this for myself, so I tested resistance for Autolite, Motorcraft, NGK and Champion.

Autolite DP -APP 103's = 6.60 (all 8)
Motorcraft's - AGSF 22WM's = 4.54 (all 8)

(The two plugs above are for the 5.4L engine ^^^ and are the spark plugs that a few people refer to as the same )

NGK BPR7ES = 4.20
NGK BPR6ES = 4.34
NGK BPR5ES = 4.52
NGK DPR9Z = 3.81

Champion RN11YC4 = 0 (no reading at all, -and no, that wasn't "0" resistance lol)
Champion RN11YC = 0
Champion RC9YC = 0
Champion 5861 (J19) = 0

A few of the Champions were purchased new and had to be replaced with NGK Sparkplugs. The engines that I was running Champion Plugs in ran like garbage, -if at all.

The Autolites tested were hit and miss, I know these are bad,- some fired and some didn't. New, purchased 2004-2005 and are cross referenced with the Motorcrafts.

The Motorcrafts tested have been run and work fine.

I stand by these readings as accurate, but I'm not sure what this proves. I will say it makes sense to me lol.

ihilani , your readings would have me throwing the old ones back in to confirm that it isn't or is a plug problem. Since this is the only part you were trying to update. If that's the case, this is first one I've ever heard of. Hard to believe that it could be the new Motorcraft plugs as well. Please update the thread when you get it figured out, thanks.

Just going to throw this out there. Not sure if the 4.6's had the same issues with the passenger exhaust manifold as the 5.4L leaking but I think I read that you've heard that sound over the past few years on cold mornings. Could it be the exhaust manifold gasket making that chattering sound? I would try to pinpoint where the sound is coming from. Mine only leaked on cold mornings, then would go away. Even the exhaust shop couldn't find my leak because it was warm when I brought it in there. They had to wait till it cooled down, then started it to pinpoint the leak. Might be way off but thought Id throw it out there. The noise sounded like metal flapping/slapping. Since the studs were broken off, the gasket would flap around.

Sorry I didn't respond yesterday. It was too wet and cold to do anything outside. Today I'm going to replace the remaining 4 old plugs, see if that helps or hurts and then test out the plug wires.

If all fails, I've got a great mechanic who is happy to repair the things I mess-up.

Any other last minute thoughts or suggestions would be welcome.

Hello all,

Took 1/2 day of vacation to finish changing the plugs. Started the engine and same sound. Coming up on the 3K oil change so decided to change the oil = > restarted the motor, same sound only less intense.

Took the truck for a ride in the neighborhood and heard the clacking echoing off the houses on the street. Truck had more power than when I started this project, so I came to a stretch of wide open road, stopped and just opened the throttle up. Couldn't hear the clacking in 3rd due to the motor and exhaust noise. Slowed down and the sound was gone.

JBrew and crew, thanks for all your help. I'd never take these projects on if I didn't know you guys were out there.

Mahalo

I bet it wasn't missing at all, -and something fell into the cylinder. Probably sitting on the head or resting safely in your lower intake. Very lucky, you should play the lotto lol, -things could have went much worse.

Nice turnout

You weren't using a Fram oil filter, were you?

I wonder if the PCV valve baffle inside the passengerside cam cover broke off. There were some problems with them coming loose and making a rattling sound when the followers bounced them around. Sometimes the noise would go away when the baffle dropped down away from the followers. I thought of this before but figured you had a miss problem as well.

Hello all,

Here I thought I was out of the woods. Assuming something fell through a spark plug hole or came off the PCV, do I have to worry about more damage when the object shifts again or can I relax?

thanks
