Champion 7989 two piece, porcilin and one piece metal ground nut, the oil was cooler with the 160 thermostat so the phaser's were locked out and the truck ran better. I would have taken the motor to the ford dealer to pull the stuck plugs but the end of the insulator was in one. You get any procilin into the cly and it will wreck that hole. I am changing the phaser's on the older motor, got the driver side done, took out the wheel well linner on the pass side to get to the last cover bolt and the trany dip tube bolt. Lifted the cover pulled off the phaser and found it has been replaced before, then it gets ugly. Chain guide is broken, just about ready to remove timming cover as soon as I figure out how to get the last power steer pump bolt out, it will be a good time to check if the cams were timed right.

Cover off, phasers changed, cams were out of time, fixed that, replaced all chain guides and recovered broken chunks. Time to reassemble the rest, and put the 195 thermostat back in.

Thanks for the updates. How could the cams have gotten out of time? Did the chain jump a link somehow?

Ethier when the dealer changed the phaser or after because both chain guides on the right side were broke, the side they changed.

310000 kms still ran great, 1 quart oil for 10000kms.
got two more jobs, putting on 7000kms to 10000kms a month so I sold the 05 FX4 and bought a new 10 FX4, great truck, do not really like anti spin or the abs brakes that come on when turning corners on the ice.
But this seams to be the future of the truck driving you not you driving the truck.

If you have a book should go alright, also you will need bandaids and some patience, stay away from engineers for awhile after, incase you want to go postal.
