Unhappy 2005 Cam Phaser problems

05 F150 5.4, 283000kms.
Has a knock at rpm under 1000, sometimes rough idle, but ran not to bad.
I found the motor was running cool so I put in a new thermostat and the temp came up to normal. I new problem has now started, when coming of the gas durring parking or slow manovers the motor idle will drop so low the truck stalls. (Auto trans) The knocking is only with warm motor, no noise and runs great till warmed up. Would an oil change to a higher viscosity oil help? I am guessing the problem is with the cam phasers? No codes.

the stalling issue is not caused by the cam phasers...i highly suspect you disconnected the battery while working of your vehicle correct? There is a TSB for reflashing the PCM for a stalling issue after disconnecting the vehicles battery or killing the battery/KAM reset. It contains a new sludge compensation strategy for the throttle body. I have ran into this problem on multiple high KMs F150s. TSB 08-18-2.

the knocking however is most likely cam phasers.

Code now

Got a code today P0022, Bank 2 over retard.
No I have not disconceted the batt, tried to find the TSB for the low idle, could not find anywhere I could read it. Was going to disconect the batt for an hour reconect and let the truck idle utill fully warm. If you could direct me to a location for the TSB I would appreciate it. Thanks

If you have a P0022 then you have a stuck cam phaser, you probably only have 4 cylinders contributing as well.

Thanks for your help. I think for the price of the cam phasers and related I will look for a lower mileage motor at the wreckers, found one 130000k for 1700, out of an 05 4X4.

$2500 for the motor complete or, 375 for each phaser plus gaskets and posibly elec solenoids at 240 each and will still have a motor with almost 300000kms. Will atleast have lots of spare coils ect if needed.

Motor is sitting on the floor in my shop. Changed the thermostat in the old motor in the truck back to a 160, stalling problem almost gone, still noisy but can live with the noise and hope to make it to spring before I switch the motor.

Preparing the newer motor to install thought I would change the plugs. Bad Idea! Craked the loose and put in penitrating fluid, let soak for 1 hr, end result 3 tips one with the porclin stuck in the heads. To scarred to have porclin fall in the cyl so pulled the heads.
Now putting the phasers with 49000kms in the motor in the truck. Waitting for gaskets bolts ect for the newer motor, if the old one is quite I keep running it utill I have to change it and will have put the other motor together. Also found a two piece plug from champion. #7989.

you mean the one peice champion plug? Those broken parts come out pretty easy from what I've read especially on an engine stand I would have followed the TSB and removed the stuff. You should have read the complete TSB on the plugs before touching them its not penetrating oil you needed but a solvent like carb cleaner.

I agree. The cleaner Ford recommends in the current TSB is to break up carbon deposits on the electrode sleeve that makes plug removal difficult. Ford changed the TSB from penetrating liquid since it didn't work like they had planned considering the real reason the plugs wouldn't come out.

Nothing like making more work...

Not sure what you are trying to accomplish with the cooler thermostat, but these engines need to run between 195-210 for maximum efficiency. I would stay with a 195 thermostat.
