2000 5.4 issues

2000 5.4 issues

Hi guys, I’m new here, but what a great site this is, I spent the last few nights reading over some of the post and have a few questions about some issues I am having with my truck with is a 2000 f150 ext cab 4x4 with a 5.4 in it.. first of, I got the truck stuck in my driveway before Christmas in a blizzard and ended up leaving it there for a few days, when I pulled it out it was blown in pretty good, took some yanking to get it out, the next day the service engine soon light came on and it started running like crap, I took it to a buddy and he put it on a code reader and nothing, so he went to his shop and got a better scope and it was showing some misfire in the # 8 and 6 cylinder, so I decided to change the plugs, what a eye opener that was, last plugs I changed was a 84 Bronco 2, I guess I should add that the truck has 270,000km and I have had the truck since new and have never done the plugs before and believe it or not I have not even changed the fuel filter before ether { looks like that will be my job for tomorrow after reading some other posts}. anyhow, after lifting the coils of the plugs I noticed every plug on both sides had a lot of oil ontop of the plugs, any idea what or where that would be from??? I cleaned the coils up, switch the #8 and #1 coils around, changed the plugs and put every thing back together and it runs great.. problem is now after reading some post on cops I guess I should of put some kind of dialectic grease on them, I take it that the grease is to prevent moisture from getting to the plugs, should I pull them back off and put some grease on them??? if I need to I think I will order some of those eBay coil and put them in also... I noticed that you can get a whole set of coils for just over 60 bucks, up here in Alberta they want 80 bucks apiece for them... thanks in advance for any or all help and I look forward to participating in some of the decisions that go on this site...

I had oil in my spark plug wells on the passenger side motor from not using a funnel when I would change the oil. The oil would spill onto the valve cover and run into the spark plug hole. But I don't see how oil could end up in the drivers side plug wells.

As for the plugs and coils, replace the plugs with Motorcraft, torque to 28 ft lbs with no anti seize. Dielectric grease isn't required, but its definitely recommended. And buying the coils off ebay from global or uneek is a good idea, I did the same and haven't had a problem with them yet. Oh, and definitely change that fuel filter lol...

Dielectric grease isn't required,
Sorry, it *is* required.

Do you have the special tool to remove the fuel filter? Not sure about your model but the 2001 f150 model requires a tool that clamps around the line then inserts into the end of the filer to release it. It about drove me mad the first time I tried to change it out.

No i do not have that special tool but was going to pick one up whan i pick up a new filter... thanks for the heads up...

lol, well, what I meant was that it'll work without the dielectric grease, but yeah, I should have just said to definitely put it on lol

Ya.. thats what i was thinking aswell, i have been knowing to spill some from time too time also , but the drivers side has me a bit concerned... looks like i will order some eBay coils and start over again... Thanks for the heads up guys

Was it oil or just dirt? You might need cam cover gaskets..

Ya it was oil. I blow it off good with a air compresser before i started. I think i will put a few thousand km one it and see what they look like when i change the coils.
