Lol you're not kidding by saying "Do at your own risk..". I was reading a little on this and 2stroked made up my mind for me, I'm not using water under there. I was wondering though, is it safe to spray something such as a tire dressing on the whole motor, or should I avoid that also?

If your engine is grungy, go ahead and clean it carefully with something like Simple Green, rags, and a fine water mist. Then change all the coils.

Mine doesn't have the cover on it with the TRITON 5.4 raised lettering. The one it had was cracked so I tossed it. I wash my engine all the time. I use degreaser with a citrus smell. I love the smell of napal... er Oranges in the morning. I use my air compressor to dry all the nooks and crannies so that I don't get a misfire caused by water.
I didn't purchase individual coils when I started having misfires. They are over $100.00 a pop locally. E-bay for less than the price of one and I had eight.
So once you find which cylinder is misfiring you have 3 causes. Spark, fuel, and mechanical. If you already replaced the #3 coil twice that should tell you that something is killing that coil. People forget that there are 2 other parts that attach to the coil. The spring or in some cases the wire and the boot. If the boot is damaged it will allow the spring to ark through to the spark plug well. Moisture/debris in the plug well will create a shorter path for the current to flow to. A fouled plug can misfire. A faulty injector or fuel system can cause a lean condition causing a misfire. A leak in the intake manifold near that cylinder can cause the misfire.

When was the transmission fluid last changed?

Food for thought.

Wow that's a lot of information thanks JMC. I still don't want to get water in there, that 2stroker guy said even if you're lucky enough to not have an ignition problem right away, you can still have something rust from the water later.
$100 each, is that at the Ford dealership? I get them for $50 at Advance Auto..I don't know whether there as good as Motorcraft or not. It wasn't the same one that went, the first was the number 1 cylinder and this time it was number 3.
When I picked up this truck at the lot it had about 94,000 miles, so I'll change the transmission fluid at 120,000 since that would be the maintenance schedule. I'll also have the transfer case and differential fluid changed, I figure it would be good to have that done with the transmission at 60,000 miles.

Careful... They do soil JUST as easily. People just don't notice it as easily.

Get over confident and you will have the same spot on the back of those Carharts.

My brother-in-law got over confident at the mall one time. Next thing you know, he's standing in the mens room blow drying his underwear with the hand dryer.
