PI Heads?????

I know in the mustang world that the PI heads came on the 99'-04 2v 4.6. Did ford ever put those on the F150 2V, and if so what years?

PI heads

The Power Improved heads were first used on the F150 and Crown Vic 4.6 in 2001.

The 1999 5.4 F-150 got Pi heads the 4.6 F-150 got Pi heads in 2001. The SuperDuty 5.4 and 6.8 got Pi heads in 2000.

PI heads

I've heard that the PI/non PI engines had different pistons; so PI heads on a non PI engine ups the compression ratio to about 10 to 1. Is this a swap you are considering?

Yes and no...Just doing some research, and was actualy looking at cams.
With the mustang the compression does go up and now TFS has their new 2v PI head that you can get in two different comp. ratios to compensate if your using them on a non PI motor.

It would be nice to get a little more out of the 4.6, but in all honesty it realy needs a LOT more low end torque!!!! i.e. more displacement!!!!!!

I guess I need to figure out how far I want to go.

You can P&P your Npi's and get good results while keeping the the stock CR if that is what you would like.

Ask Nick at http://www.modularheadshop.com/heads.htm

I am in the process (should finish today) of installing PI heads and intake on my 97 F-150 4.6. From what I know about this swap I should get around 30 more hp and 40 ft lb's torque. I had a blown head gasket so decided to just replace with new parts and installed new exhaust manifolds as well while I had it down. Good luck.

What else did you need to do the conversion besides the heads and intake?

I'm just no sure if I want to get that far into it....it's my daily driver and I don't want to compromise the drivablity or the fuel mileage.

I think if I was realy going to do something to improve it I would try a 5.4 swap.

non-PI heads are 51cc chambers, PI heads are only 42cc. I don't know the exact C.R. of the non-PI 5.4s, but if it was 9:1 then just swapping to PI heads would raise it a full point to 10:1. Some of the ported PI heads are around 46cc which would split the difference at 9.5:1. The TFS heads are available as 38cc or 44cc, both significantly less than stock non-PI heads.

You can get the heads to flow similar to ported PI heads, but you are still saddled with the crap non-PI intake manifold.

I finished and have been driving around with it. I do notice more power but not a huge difference. One thing to watch for is buy head gaskets for the pre power improved heads ( block) not the new PI heads. The high pressure oil feed on the passenger side head (rear)will be either partially covered or completely (depends on gasket make) covered with the newer PI gasket. Pre PI gasket will work with the PI head and the old block as the gasket has a larger opening. I'm happy so far with mine. Took me about 18 hours doing it by myself in the garage. Could do it a lot quicker the second time around I think. Learned a few short cuts. Good luck. P/S I have not heard any spark knock so far. Guys I know who have done this conversion say they rarely get any spark knock and if so it's only occasional and very low grade.

Sorry I didn't take any pics. I was pressed for time and the weather was a factor as well. Its a three day job for one guy, around 18 hours. I spent alot of time crawling in and out of the engine compartment, at 6' 2" and 215 lbs it was a little cramped at times. Two guys would be a lot better.

was just wondering you really only got 30 more ponies out of the pi heads on a non pi block ? i have been reading about the swap and i have been hearing around 75 to 100 horse? and was also told that the stock intake man would also produce more torque than the pi one which would produce more power. well that all depends on your application i guess but was just wondering

if its really only 30 horse, man thats a lot of work . might as well put the 5.4 in it?
