bearing type noise

I have a 2000 5.4 f-150 and there is a bearing type noise that sounds like it is comming from the upper dash around the radio. It sounds like an idler pulley but with the serpentine belt off the noise is still there. It changes pitch with engine RPM, it can't be heard under the hood. Ford garage said it could be exhaust tube noise or torque converter..... they want $80 to check out. Any ideas appreciated

There are different kinds of bearings that make different noises. A rod or crank bearing will sound like a tapping/knocking noise when failing. A sealed or roller bearing will usually give a squeeling noise when it starts to fail. Depends on what you are hearing that can help us point you in the right direction.
