Got the code read today. I have a misfire in the #1 cylinder and a buncha ?'s.

Where is the #1?
What causes a misfire? plug, COP,
What should the defective part be replaced with? OEM, aftermarket

cylinder one is the very front passenger side cylinder. what motor do you have? its most likely a coil. if its time for a tuneup then i'd do the plugs and coils all at once. you can get a full set of 8 coils from global and uneek on ebay for 70 bucks. just type in dg508(for 2v engine) in the search bar.
if you have a 3v engine then you have to type in dg511 and its like 140 bucks for all 8

 

i have the 5.4 and the truck has 104000 sorry

 

well, i know the plugs will most likely be expensive but i think you'll need to do them and that one coil at least. or like i said you can get all 8 off ebay for 140 bucks.

Time for a spark plug change, and please do your homework before even touching them.

 

At 104k, follow Matts advice and get 8 Cops off eBay, and replace the plugs too.

 

How expensive?

 

at the dealer its like 250 bucks labor plus 80 bucks per broken plug. then you have to add the cost of the new plugs.

 

Dealer price on the plugs are $20 to $25 each. $250 labor is actually at the low end. With 104k, the odds of no plugs breaking are very slim.

 

F**K $20-25 a piece and 150 for the COPs.
I would love to tackle the plugs and save 250 bucks but not if they may break and cost even more

Most have said they followed they TSB exactly and were successful.

 

you can do it yourself. but make sure you dont have to drive the truck for a couple days just in case. if you break a plug or a few then you can make your own tool. there are members on here that have done this and its worked for them. i did a 5.4 3v this weekend and i was able to start the engine to blow out the broken part of the #4 plug. i'll see if i can find the threads with the home made tools. heres the plug that broke on the one i did over the weekend

don't bother please i don't want to worry bout home made tools til I need them. WHICH I WON'T! lol but ya I've seen them.

another question:
what is the harm in driving the engine with the CEL and misfire? I know its not good for many reasons. But should i quit driving it altogether? The planter and tractor is in the shop, and will be til we get done and get it washed up, so like 2-3 weeks

 

OEM Motorcraft spark plugs are about 9 bucks each at Rockauto.com. There is a 3rd party extractor tool available for about 70 to 80 bucks.

 

A misfire will allow unburnt fuel to wash down the cylinder walls. Any unburnt fuel that goes out the exhaust will ruin the CAT.
