Really? $1,000?!?!

so last sunday me engine light came on while im trying to save for rotors new suspension and prom. and i took it in this morning and i called around noon today and he said thats all 8 spark plugs needed to be replaced and 2 were burnt out, and some "coil" was bad, and my front passenger side ball joint was about to fall off. and i asked him how much the damage was and ha said almost $1,000 i was speechless and he had to ask if i was still on the line. but i get my truck back tomorrow!

i'd reccomend doing at least the plugs yourself. that should knock off almost 200 bucks. most places charge around 250 for a plug change(for the v8's). use motorcraft plugs. get them from rockauto.com. what motor do you have? if 5.4= you can get a full set of 8 coils for 80 bucks on ebay. just type in dg508 in the search bar. if 4.2 or 4.6 then i'd search rockauto.com or ebay may have some new motorcraft coil packs for cheap that someone didnt need. as for the ball joint it all depends on if your up for the job. you'll need to rent the tools from autozone. 2 wheel drive or 4? and was the quote fpor all 4 ball joints or just 1 or 2? and on which side? i'd recommend doing both on the side with the bad one so it doesnt have to be torn apart again any time soon.

Do you have a check engine light on? Gets the codes read to figure out which cylinder is misfiring and do the plugs and stuff yourself. Pretty cheap fix.

Then you can buy the ball joints and if you dont feel like doing that yourself take it to a smaller shop.

i wasnt sure if he was picking it up after the work is done to it or if he was picking it up to think about what he was going to do. i just assumed he was gonna think about it since he made this thread. i figured he was asking what he should do. oh well i guess we'll find out if he ever returns to let us know whats goin on with it

I hadn't thought of it that way. You could be right.

My comment was directed primarily at the high school kids (notice they were saving $ for prom) who don't realize how good they have it. I think my first car in HS was worth maybe a couple grand, on a good day.

However, I suggest you start saving for when something goes wrong, or you need to get new tires, or a spark plug or 2 breaks off, or you get a speeding ticket, etc, etc. That, or just pray that nothing bad ever happens.

Don't buy what you can't afford, it's pretty simple. Then again, alot of people don't seem to understand that which is a part of the reason we're currently in this economic trouble.

I work hard for my money, so I think I'll just keep it here with me

Well, i've been really busy with work, school and this one girl.
NCSU- a HS job doesn't pay much so thats why i'm complaining, I got this truck from my grandparents bone stock and i've done all the mods so you just need to shut the hell up. We have had confrontations before.

JMC- thanks I agree, I dont have $1,000 in my accounts either.

lordfeyr- yes it came on.

Stephen87 - yes I got it done at a shop near my house cause i'm in high school and I cant miss anymore days of school and it's not like I have a next year cause i'm a SENIOR!!! OHHH NINE!!!!

Mattsford- it's a 5.4 2wd front passenger side ball joint was replaced.

dont ya'll hate it when people hate on your truck when they have the same one? DUMB! when NCSU get up to 121,600 miles his truck the he is gonna start crying a river then he will just have to build a bridge and get over it. and im gonna be the one driving around in that platinum f 150. people these daysss.... gahhhh

To all the HS out there. Dont think you get older and things get easier. Think about it. So your in HS making say $8/hr with no real bills, then you grad. move out get a full time job making $10-15/hr. You've got your rent and your beer and maybe a few small other bills. Then you get a little older, you make $20+/hr but you've got a house, a wife, a kid. The amount of money you have is relative to what you do with it and what bills you have. I know I used to think about the money "I would have" when I got a little older. And here I am making more money then I ever have and still dont have any. (But I am happy as a clam, I love my wife, and my little girl, and the truck I have) Just save whenever you have the opportunity.

thats 100% true too. i graduated high school may last year. it sucks to be on your own. i have rent, electric, cable bills, plus the food bills, gas for the truck, parts for my truck, plus whenever i want to hang out with friends. it all adds up.

i have $6k into my truck. that is for everything i've done to it and buying it. and i still found time to do the work myself, with work and school and dealing with my parents being divorced, having to go back and forth from my moms to my dads and back to my moms.

what the hell is up with this comment? who was hatin on your truck? yea 1000 bucks is a big chunk of change but wait until you have real bills. and most of them will seem like your getting ripped off
just a quick example- when you go to the hospital, the doctor will write you a 50 dollar bill and then write you a prescription, but that 50 dollars doesnt pay for the prescription.
and even the platinum f150 will have some problems. and they will probably have more expensive repairs with all the options and you'll really be squeeling like a pig then. its life and right now you have it easy. i'm in college and paying actual bills and i dont complain one bit.

and what did you need to save money for prom for? dont most parents pay for the outfits? or is it so that you can illegally drink? i think i spent a total of 50 bucks for my prom. and that was spent on my dates flowers and ice cream afterwords.
