Engine trouble????

Hello everyone....this is my first post....I have an 05' Ford Lariat 4x4, 5.4L V8 with about 68000 miles....recently I started having problems with it shaking extremely bad....I changed the oil and filter one night and drove it about 40-50 miles the next day and it did fine....but then I went to leave later that afternoon it started acting up really bad at lights and at very low RPM's....I was backing up to pull a trailer with it and it just died out on me....I pulled the trailer back home and it was fine on the highway....but when I hit the street lights and stop signs it would just shake and die out....I took it to the neighborhood autoparts store and had them do the check engine scan, and they told me that the timing was off....and that the cam sensor was bad???? It does act like if its off timing because it knocks really bad???? Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated guys....Thanks in advance, Littleherby.

what were the codes? we need the actual p code. possible fuel injector issue. the 05 5.4 had a bad batch of injectors. they are warrantiued for 100000 miles if that is the case. what kind of oil do you use and how often do you change it? the timing chain tensioners are controlled by oil pressure so if its sludged up then that could cause that not to work. that or if they leak then it still wouldnt have much if any tension. but we need the code to start.

edit: welcome to f150online

2nd edit: it may also be the fuel pump driver module. up north they are rusting out and failing. they are causing similar issues like yours. most cases they just run a few minutes or seconds and then just shut off. they control when the fuel pump is on and how much pressure it puts out.

A couple questions. Did this problem only start after you changed your oil or was it running poorly before the oil change? Do you smell gas now or did you smell gas in the oil you removed? Have you pulled the dip stick and checked for gas in the oil or for overfull condition? Did you hear knocking while it was pulling the trailer and running fine or does it only knock while acting up? As Matt asked the codes would help as well.

I just recently bought my truck about a 2 mths ago....the lady that I bought it from told me it was serviced regularly....she also told me she had some recall work done before I bought....I haven't got back with her on what she actually had done though....I used 5w20 full synthetic....what I can see from the print out was this....there is no codes....I didn't look at them on the computer....
Definition:
BB variable cam timing over retarded-bank 2
explanation:
BB the ECM has detected the VCT position in an over BB retarded condition-camshaft timing retarded
Probable cause:
BB1.-cam timing incorrect
BB2.-vct solenoid stuck open"
(2)Another print out said:
Definition:
BB camshaft position sensor "A" circuit bank 2
Explanation:
BB the ECM has detected a lost signal from camshaft BB sensor A bank 2
Probable cause:
BB1.-Check other service codes first
BB2.-Open or short circuit condition
BB3.-Poor electrical connection
BB4.-Failed camshaft sensor
(3)The last print out they gave me said:
Definition:
BB cam sensor condition
Explanation:
BB camshaft position sensor signal is monitored BB for errors...
Probable cause:
BB1.-cam sensor defective
BB2.-check connector and wiring to sensor
BB3.-engine mechanical condition-timing belt/chain BB out of time

For now till you get this sorted, try premium gas to try to reduce the knocking.

At this point if it were my truck, it would be at a GOOD garage or at the dealership.
You have a couple of serious issues from what you are explaining.
Thankfully I have a good friend who owns a shop and uses the Snap-On Modus unit which would help with a proper diagnosis. I also have a Dealership 5-6 miles away that I trust and that has taken good care of me in the past, and another Dealership that I trust just as much, if not more, 12 miles away.

Pull the cam sensors and take a look at the end of them. Sometimes a piece of debris will contaminate the cam sensors (they are magnetized) and this will throw them out of wack or break them as well. I doubt that you are actually out of base timing unless the chain slipped a few links and thats not likely unless you have some other major issues going on or a bad phaser. Sounds like the truck runs fine off idle? Have you checked the COP's and all other connections? If nothing else this will get you back to the top where someone else can add their thoughts. Good luck.

Yeah I checked the COP's and the other connections visually and there is nothing loose or broke or nothing like that, that I can see....I hate to sound dumb but where are the cam sensors and how do you take them out???? Is there a diagram of the engine on this website???? Never really messed with anything like this before....Really appreciate the help guys....

Cam sensors are on the front cover just below the cam covers. On the outside they are basicly a small black connector that has a wire with a disconnect snapped on to them. There is one 8mm bolt holding them on. Just remove the bolt and the sensor pulls straight out. Seriously if you are not experienced with working on these engines you may want to just take it in as someone else mentioned. There are things here that can cause some serious damage to the engine if they don't get repaired properly. If you continue running the truck the way it is something will break and possibly cost you more money or leave you stranded. Good luck.

Hey Dynotech....I've never changed the spark plugs on this truck that were talking about on this thread....after reading all the things going wrong with the spark plugs I was wondering....would a broken spark plug(s) create these symptoms????
