2005 ford f150 V8 5.4

My Ford F150 has a v8 engine on it. I bought it about 5 months ago used and the noise its making is really scaring me. When im in park or drive, either or, at about 1000 rpm's my truck is making a tapping noise. Doesn't sound like its doing it when im actually going, just when im at or around 1000 rpm's? Need help please!

my 04 was making a noise at about the same rpm. It was more of a rattle coming from the drivers side fire wall, it turned out to be a loose connection between the factory air intake, and intake manifold, it was very annoying, hope this helps.

My truck just started doing this the past couple days!!
I was wondering what the hell was wrong with it, but my truck is a high performance truck. I have an 06 F150 4x4 with an MMR 5.4 and an STS turbo system, hope that part will fix it.

My truck makes that noise a little over idle to about 1200 rpm, nasty sounding!! But once you step on it, it goes right away!

It kind of sounds like valve chatter to me. Anyone agree? The 4.7L Toyota engine is known for doing the same thing. From all of the research I have done (at least on that particular engine), there are not any harmful effects of it.

With that said, I am certainly NOT a mechanic! haha

the video that i posted was a cam phaser noise in a mustang i think. the cam phasers are a real common noise for the 04 to i think early 08 3v engines. they wont hurt anything but it will scare some people to death.

jamesb6- could you possibly get a video of the sound? and is it coming from 1 side or both sides?

this is not a big problem but is very annoying .i was told that it is a cam phaser and it is a very common issue. mine is out of warranty and i wont do anything about now but it is annoying as hell and sounds like a diesel. there is a phaser on both sides of engine and mine was on the passenger side and stops at about 2000 rpm. i hope this halps or makes you feel better.

mine does have a cam phaser noise at low rpms and at idle sometimes....82,000 miles and runs great otherwise...just sounds kinda crappy. Sound goes away at higher rpms though

Embarrassing!

I have the same problem with my '05. I just recently took it my local Ford dealer and got a quote of $1,160.00 to have the cam phasers changed out. I will probably have it done in about a month or so, it is really embarrassing to drive around with that damn noise. It kind of sounds like a can rattling around - irritating!

If you were close to me in VA, I could change both phasers for $250 plus parts.

After reading the above post, I was wondering if we should compile a list of local mechanics within the states who can replace the cam phasers. This would be great in that it would probably cost only a fraction of what the dealer is charging.

So, with this said, anyone in California?
