Question Engine swapping stuff!

To all you guys who responded to my first post about dropping a 5.4 in place of my 4.6, Thanx a millons! This has got to be the most informational site ever! So in essense, I have the idea that the talked about swap will work. But is this a time consuming thing, costly, and most of all, is it worth the effort? Will a set of heads from a 5.4 fit on a 4.6? And one last question, would it just be easier to go with another 4.6 to 4.6 instead of a 5.4 swap out? And I don't really know what this means, But my engine is a vin6. Is that relating to the fly wheel bolt pattern!

You should fill out the information in the user control panel so your truck information appears on every post like mine does in the upper right of this reply.
Heads will swap. Really it comes down to what year you have. If your truck is under a 2000 youll have to use your coil pack ignition and you would need a custom tune on any 4.6 to 5.4 swap. Few other things like exhaust and some wiring issues. Not to big a deal though. if you really dont need the extra power 4.6 swap would be easier..

Need to know what you have and what year!

This guy did it without much difficulty and is happy with the extra power.

According to your other thread you have a 1998 4.6. If your VIN is 6 then you have an 8 bolt crankshaft. The truck 5.4 engines have 8 bolt crankshafts. Yes the 2000 5.4 from an F-350 will fit in your engine bay. The only problems not covered in the swap notes is the placement of the throttle body in the SuperDuty (F250-350) trucks. It is angled towards the driver side where the F-150 has it facing forward. The shape of the throttle body is different and will require slight modifications to the air inlet tubing.

The 2000 model year 5.4 should have Pi head whereas your 4.6 will have a non Pi head. You cannot use a 5.4 intake manifold on a 4.6. rwegardless of the head design. Without adapting you cannot use a non PI intake manifold with a Pi head. The first year of Pi intake manifolds on the truck 4.6 was 2001. You would need to find a 2001 or newer intake manifold from a 4.6 to bolt to the Pi heads. 2001 to 2004 Heritage 4.6 intake manifolds will fit.

FYI In 2004 Ford had two models of the F-150 for sale. The Heritage, which resembles your 1998 and the new body style. The new body style intake manifold had an electric throttle body so stay from that one.

I am about 90% that the superduties with the 5.4 never got the PI heads until 2001 when the f150's 4.6L got them.

I believe that in 2000 the gas engines got the increase and 2001 the Power Stroke got the power increase. At least that is what the Ford site indicates.

5.4 heads to a 4.6 engine

My truck is a 1998 f-150. I t has a 4.6 in it. So if I just replaced the heads from a 5.4, what year heads would I need from it to work?

The only difference between 4.6 heads and 5.4 heads are the engine that they are bolted to. Now, there are two different kinds of heads. Power improved heads, PI and non Power improved heads. Non Pi heads were used in all of the 1997-1998 year trucks. In 1999 the 5.4 got the Pi heads. In 2001 the 4.6 finally got the Pi heads. The intake manifolds were also changed to match the different heads. The 4.6 manifolds will not fit on the 5.4 engines and vice versa. So to answer your question; non Pi 1997-1998 5.4 heads will bolt on to your engine without requiring modification. Any 1997-2000 4.6 head will also bolt on without modification. If you want to use a Pi head any 1999 + 5.4 head or 2001+ 4.6 head will bolt on to your engine provided you use a 2001+ 4.6 intake manifold.
