spitt...sputter...spit.....

I have a 2000 F150 5.4 ltr. triton. The other day I was driving on the freeway and i go to push on the gas and she starts shuddering like she just seen a ghost or something. Anyways I'm pretty sure it's missing on a cylinder but i'm trying to diagnose the problem. I'm thinkin coil pack. But it only misses once the engine is warmed up and under load. It's not like a consistent miss........it'll miss for a second, fire for a second, miss for a second...etc. And it doesn't do it when the engine's cold. Any ideas?

sounds like a coil is going bad or the fuel pump is failing when it gets hot. mileage? when was the last tuneup if ever? and what brand plugs? when was the fuel filter last changed? and you have cop's= coil on plug ignition system not coil packs. coil packs fire multiple cylinders. cop's fire 1 cylinder each.

It's got 110K miles on it. I have yet to have it tuned up, and i'm not sure what brand of plugs. I'm not the most knowledgable on the subject, i know the basics about engines but I look under the hood of this thing and it looks more like a computer than an engine. Thanks for the input. These forums are by far the best source of info for my troublesome lemon of a pickup. Oh and I changed the fuel filter about 10,000 miles ago

well if its never been tuned up then that'll definately be one cause of your problems. factory plugs are motorcraft. motorcraft denso and ngk are the only plugs worth putting in the modular engines.

Boy I hate digging up old threads, but I'm experiencing almost exactly this. 99 5.4 2wd with 169000 miles. I replaced the plugs and COP's with Bosch Platinum's and Accel's at around 120000-130000 or so as well as the fuel filter when that started to go. I've never had any fueling issues or misses with this truck until now. Ran some injector cleaner through and that did nothing. I don't think it's the pump because it can happen warm or cold and it's intermittent and seemingly on a single cylinder. I've tried unplugging each injector one at a time while idling to see if I could pinpoint which one it is, but led me no-where. Any tips on where to go from here? Should I just bite the bullet on a new set of injectors and if so, which ones are the best bang/buck? Thanks guys!

Oh almost forgot, not getting any trouble codes with this either.

May not be your problem but would not surprise me at all. You replaced with two items that people have had problems with, Bosch plugs and Accel coils. Were it me, the first thing I would do is order a set of coils from Global-Automotive, about $100 off ebay, and a set of Motorcraft plugs. Then if it persisted, I would look for someting else as the problem.

What do you think about these for a replacement set? Maybe 21# Accel's instead?

Looked for the COP's from Global but couldn't find them. Do you have a link?

The Accel COP's have been giving people problems?? Don't they have a warranty?

Thanks for the tips. I'm not looking forward to doing the plugs again on this truck and I'd REALLY like to avoid that haha. Injectors would be a cakewalk compared to the plugs.

Get those Bosch plugs OUT of there, I don't care how big a pain it is. They have a tendency to self-destruct, and it''s very bad for an engine to have spark plug pieces rattling around the combustion chambers.

Go to Ebay and search for "dg508" and you will find sets from Global and Uneek.

Righteous. Thanks glc. You have a part number and gap setting for the motorcrafts? I think I'm just going to do the whole enchilada at once and get it over with. I'm pissed about those Accel COP's though. Have they really been giving everyone issues??

Man, if that isn't the worst combination, I don't know what is lol.

Bosch plugs and Accel coils. Those plugs will cost you an engine.
