I measured diameter not width. Wrapped the tape rule around the filter. The FG872 is 3" wide measuring across the top and 3 " tall. Pulled the filter today and it is a FG986B. Thought maybe some dummy changed the bracket but it looks like the original. So I call the dealer and according to the parts guy he said the factory might have ran out of that filter and put the FG986B on. Said he had seen weirder things.

Anyway I got the FG986B today. Fit right in the bracket. Stumble is gone. 
It was so stopped up I don't see how it was runnin. Anyway I have the COP's and plugs to do the tuneup when I get to it.By the way. I was under the truck checkin everything out and spare is gone. Whats the long black box next to the spare that has wires and a hose hooked to it?

The new one is big 9 1/4" diameter. The one on the truck now looks like it fits the bracket pretty tight and is about 6 1/2 to 7" diameter and it is a Motorcraft also. Maybe someone did put the wrong one on. Could'nt tell what the numbers were. Ran out of fuel for the torpedo heater and my bulb blew in my trouble light so I took it as abad sign and left it for tommorrow.

FWIW, you are confusing diameter with circumference. HERE is something to help you out a bit.

I could read that stuff all day and still be clueless. Geometry was not understood in school, although I did pass, 20 yrs. ago.
Yeah I'm glad it was only the filter. Gives me some time to do the tune up. Sold my 07 today but I still have the 01. Payments were killing me in today's economy.
