Unhappy Blown Motor

I have a slight Situation. I was driving home from school the yesterday and i had a spark plug blow out if the head. It was running great and had no CEL before that happend

It is a 2002 F-150 4.6. 128000 miles.

I had it towed to my Mechanic, he fixed that problem.

He then ran a compression test on it and no compression. Did a leak down test and its an exhaust valve, He also piut a bore scope into the cylinder and he says that the piston is melted, on one edge.

Now my question is, is it worth fixing, aka junk yard motor. i still owe 4000 on the truck and i dont want to do that major of a repair out of pocket. Just worried that i could be putting to much money into it.

If you put some money into the truck & it runs, it's better than still having to make payments on $4,000 and the truck doesn't run.

I would stay with it---find a rebuilt or junk yard engine. It would be more cost-effective to do that so tht you have a much better chance to get your 4 grand out of it.

That sounds strange you'd lose compression over a plug blowout. Might have gotten debris in the cylinder during thee repair. 4.6's dont often blow plugs either. I'd find a good running engine. You can get good ones for a grand or less. Find someone to install it for about $500 or do it yourself..

Hopefully my mechanic will get back to me with a price to fix it. Ill mention the rotating assembly to him and see what he wants to do.

If I really wanted to i could have the truck payed off tomorrow. Im really not to sure about putting that much money into it.

Going to an auto auction Saturday to Try my luck on a 2004 F-250 diesel.

I got the estimate for my truck.

1800 for a motor, i think thats a little high.
804 for labor 13.4 hours

I really dont want to do it for that much. Any ideas would be helpful.

do not buy a 04 diesel ford. it has the 6.0 in it and it was absolute junk in that year.

and as far as the motor goes. do you have any tools and enough friends that could help you out? and any kind of experience with engines? who priced out the engine itself?

He wants $2600.00 to install an 02 4.6 engine. Go to http://www.car-part.com and do a search for a 4.6. Check the 8th digit of your VIN. It is most likely a W. You will need it for the search. Prices vary and be sure to call the places that show a Call where the price should be. Also ask them what they charge to install. If you unplug the injector and the COP for the blown cylinder you can drive the truck to the scrap yard to have the engine replaced.

Im just thinkin that what if this happens when i get my new motor.

I got another estimate for 2300 with a 6 month warranty.

Thats just alot of money.

Yes but you could also end up buying something that has more issues then your turck has now but seems to run fine tell you take it of the lot and be in it for more money then your currnet truck and know what you have

Any option you take including buying a newer truck has risks. I would fix it. unless I just didnt like it then I would sell it for what i could get out of it and move on.
