Manually Cranking Engine on 97
Dipstick checks o.k. (not milky)
Engine did not lose power or smoke (also no burning smell when truck stopped).
I too four of the plugs out when attempting to turn.
With this being a 97, would it just about the same to replace the engine or the entire truck?

I think the question was what engine do you have? 4.2 4.6 or 5.4?
It sounds to me like your in a solid seized situation. Trying to get it to turn is a waste of time. Sounds like you have proven its toast. Start looking for another engine.

If the engine is truly seized, I'd look for a good used engine in the boneyard or get a Jasper rebuilt. Pull the plugs and it should turn over easily with a wrench on the crankshaft pulley bolt.
Reason I asked which engine is - the 97 4.2 V-6 had known gasket problems that lead to a hydrolock.

Before assuming the engine is seized, remove the serpentine belt and check again.
I had my AC compressor clutch seize and it locked the engine up exactly as if the engine itself were seized.

Tried it yesterday, didn't work
dont mean to hijack your thread, but i am having the same problem with my 2003 4.6L v8 triton 4x4. I did buy the truck at an auction as a water damage, and i'm trying a rebuild/restoration. The truck itself is in very good condition, but i am have a time trying to turn the engine manually. I get rotation to a certain point then it is jams, rotate back the other way for a bit and jams again. On starting with the starter (all plugs out) she rolled over for a few bumps of the ignition (a good bit of water shot out the cylinders). I wanted to get a few good turns manually before damaging something. I was thinking about removing the serpentine belt as well to possibly eliminate any other accessory pulley causing the hangup. I really dont want to go the bone yard engine route if i can have this engine rebuilt. Any professional advice or tried and proven experiences to share are appreciated. I also drained all fluids that were contaminated with water (fuel, rear, trans, motor oil).
