What kind of truck? How many miles? How old is it?

My first thought is ignition switch, or ignition relay.

The relay is actually one of the solenoids. Why they changed the term relay to solenoid is beyond me and confusing, In fact, it cheezes me off! (that's how I really feel). Back in the good old days it was called the starter relay (what's mounted on the firewall) and the solenoid was the stater solenoid mounted on the starter.

If you go to the parts store and order a starter solenoid that piggy-backs the starter - You can expect to get a relay instead, that's how it lists in the computer reference file under the part name... Been there done that.

I've been around old fords for a long long time and I've always called the Solenoid on the firewall the Solenoid. Calling it a relay is what confuses me. With old fords in my experience if the solenoid on the starter is bad that means you need a new starter. Ive never bothered replacing the solenoid on the starter with out replacing the whole thing. $50 for a whole starter you gota remove the thing anyways..

Starter Relay defined: A starter solenoid (or starter relay) is the part of an automobile which relays a large electric current to the starter motor, which in turn sets the engine in motion.

Call the damn thing what you want I guess

I know it's called the solenoid ~ BUT! - Relay makes a hell of allot more sense, simply because that is what it does. Another reason is - it cuts out the confusion with the starter solenoid since there part of the same system...

Did you by chance have the wires unhooked from the solenoid? Having the wires on the wrong terminals on the solenoid is the only scenario I can imagine from those symptoms.
